Full Version: Extremely Small Print from Webpages

Somehow a setting must have changed on my husband's computer, a Dell 3000, running Windows XP SP2. Whenever something is printed on his printer, an HP 4215, from a webpage, the print is incredibly small. The only way I've found to increase it on this pc is to use Print Preview and then change Shrink to Fit Page (which seems to be the default rather than our preferred 100%) to 100%. Then it prints normally; but usually, we forget to use Print Preview or to revise the Shrink upwards to 100%.

I went into the Printers folder to see what the default print setting is, and after rt-clicking on the printer and going to Print Preferences/Effects tab, it shows printing at 100% of Normal Size; and letters and other documents that are typed on the pc do print out at the normal 10 pt. to 12 pt. size.

On my pc, a Dell 4600, there is no problem printing from webpages in a 'normal' size print; therefore, it would seem that there is a setting that has been changed on this pc re webpages. When these webpages are viewed online, they look the normal size (medium text). I would appreciate any help that would allow me to reset it to the 'normal' size when printed out.

Thank you.

From google, I found the above explanation; and if I'm reading it correctly, Print Preview must be used to get 'normal size' printing.

I had forgotten I had put IE7 on my husband's pc, but I still have IE6 on mine. If this is the way IE7 works, I'm going to keep IE6 on mine as long as I can!

Is there a workaround for this problem? Thanks again.

This is a known problem with IE 7, as spotted on different forum, and acknowledged by Microsoft HERE.
Microsoft has a hotfix for it, but it would CHARGE you for it, which is ridiculous, anyway.
However on the above page, there is registry workaround listed, which should work, as confirmed HERE:

UPDATE: IE7 - No way to disable 'Shrink to Page/Fit' when printing.

Back in Nov 2006 we posted about the Shrink to Page feature of the new Internet Explorer 7.0 printing engine and the fact it could not be disabled, preconfigured, or manipulated via a printing template.

A new Feature Key has been added to adjust the default scaling of PRINTED pages, not PREVIEWED pages.

If you need to adjust the scaling which can be done on a per process level see the following KB article.

Link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932538/

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\InternetExplorer\MAIN\FeatureControl \FEATURE_STF_Scale_Min

DWORD <processname> (value to set to the percentage of scaling desired) Scaling value for the printout..

Valid values for the scaling are 30 to 100. Setting the value to 100 basically disables Shrink to Page/Fit. Note: This does not impact Print Preview.

Hi, Broni -

I've read a couple articles today on the reasoning behind MS's 'Shrink to Fit', but I'm not yet convinced. I've printed out your post, and in going to the link for the registry workaround, I read this: "Further testing needs to be done to fully evaluate the impact of the registry options and the change."

As I don't want any problems from changes made by me, I may continue the Print Preview to get to 100% ... even though it's extra steps.

Thanks, Broni. I appreciate your response.

...or you may want to go back to IE 6...or use another browser, as many people do.

Hi, Broni -

Going back to IE6 would probably be the best way to go, at least for now.

Thanks.
