See below Microsoft info on auto update. Try clearing cache and temp files and than trying to get the update files. Have you tried going directly to the update site and see if that works?

:head_wall: I just cleared the temp. internet files and was astounded at the amount there as I use Ccleaner regularly. Anyway, it didn't make any difference as I was still unable to get windows update. I have forgotten how to clear my cache as I rely on Ccleaner (have tried to find it using Microsoft help and google - no success).

Yes, I have tried to get Windows Update directly - I even googled them and tried several sites..... :fat_face_sad: :thanks:

Check the Microsoft site regarding a problem with one of their rollup patch installs, and see if this might apply to your situation.

:fat_face_surprised: I've read the link you gave me JohnT - frankly, I don't understand all of it! The rollup was updated in September - and I have been successful since. I am afraid of dabbling with the registy!! :head_wall:

I am not that familiar with win2k, but if you have help and support listed in start, I would click on it and than try to click on windows update from there and see if it will take you to the update site. I had somewhat the same problem with xp and IE and could not get on but was able to use support and update from there. After I got my updates it seemed to solve my problem. I am only winging it as and idea. Are you using IE as browser, and is it functioning correctly?

JohnT - I tried 'help' but didn't get anywhere. Yes, I use IE - I haven't any difficulty with other sites.

Broni - When I go from windows help, I get 'This page is unavailable.....'. When I go otherwise (Update, microsoft and other google addresses) I get 'program not responding'.

:thanks: :head_wall:

PS. I think the problem started after automatic update did its thing.

I have been trying to figure things out and remembered that I recently installed Microsoft's premium 'picture this'. I had trouble and finally found a Microsoft article on how to do it. I installed it on my hard drive. Don't know what this means as I thought everything went to the hard drive! Could this have any affect? :thanks:

Try a little experiment....
Download, and install some other browser....Mozilla, Firefox, Opera, Netscape...make it your default browser, and try your update again. Will it work?

I did not think you could use anything by IE for updates.

"Thank you for your interest in obtaining updates from our site.

Actually, if you go HERE, you can download any Windows 2000 update/SP, using any browser...

:bald_head: Broni - I installed Opera and made it my default browser. Then I was able to get Microsoft's Update. It took longer than usual so I brought up 'task master' .... it said 'running', then 'not responding', then 'running' again and then it came up.

Using Opera, I tried to find this topic by using my assistant - nothing doing! The hand was there, I clicked on my last 10 posts and it went to the hour glass and immediately flashed back again to the hand.

I hope this means something to you..... :fat_face_surprised:

PS I just tried in IE - and had the same result! Previously a box would come up saying 'the program is not responding' and giving me the options!!?!!

:fat_face_sad: In my taskbar a green square appeared (when I tried to get windows update) that said 'CPU 100%'. I've never seen that before. Does it mean something to you? :head_wall:

I thought I couldn't get the windows update page but I discovered that if I wait long enough the page appears. No matter how I try to get it, the task manager shows 'running' then 'not responding' several times. When it shows 'not responding, a green box in my taskbaar shows 100% CPU. I never used to have difficulty in getting update. I have it on 'automatic update' but like to check it occasionally as it doesn't always work. Thanks!
