You're right cybor!
Puppylinux rocks! Considering that it is only a 65 MB download even people with dial-up can download it. Then you burn it to a CD ( preferably a CD-RW because when you run it it will save stuff to your CD ).
The most amazing thing is that if you run it from a live-cd once it is running it works from your RAM and you can pull out your cd from the CD drive and put in a CD music or whatever.
Last thing it is working awfully fast once it is running. AbiWord is on in less then 5 secs (and that was on a pitiful PIII 500 Mhz with 327 MB of RAM ). My ethernet connection was figured out except that I had to go down and unplug both power cables on my external high-speed modem and router ( I was on my Linux machine at the time, will give it a try on my Win machine tomorrow).
All I can say is that it is a cute little puppy for someone who wants to try Linux without doing an install.

ohhhhhhhh, so that's how that works. it never occured to me that i can save stuff to a cd-rw, duhhh!!! i will certainly use it more now. but that brings up a few questions.
1. am i limited to the 650mb's that's left from the cd that i booted from or can i just simply keep filling up more cd's? i know i can take the boot cd out but will it write to another cd or perhaps even my actual hard drive?
2. currently when i run puppy i notice that it writes/saves stuff to my windows recovery partition. i thought that was supposed to be well protected from any outside access. if that gets corrupted then i can't trust it to restore my machine if i need to. how do i configure puppy to stay away from there when i boot the puppy?
3. not knowing how to save stuff is what's keeping me from running the live cd's more often. can i save with some of the other live distros? i've tried alot of them but i haven't studied them very close. i've tried ubuntu, knoppix, dsl, pclos, suse, mepis, linspire, and slax. will these write to cd? if so then i can find one i'm comfortable with and use it more often.
sorry, hope this isn't to many crazy questions.

Hi Cybor!
I don't have any answer to your questions. I wish I did! You can however go to the Puppy Linux home page and look into the FAQs or the wikis or even join their forum.
Have fun with the little puppy.

I just tried this on my 64 bit machine it wouldn't install. It didn't like ntfs and a few other things. But on a 32 bit 900 mhz. it runs like a dream. http://www.smartestc...tyle_emoticons/default/bravo!.gif

Good for you Rearl!
Isn't it amazing how fast you can open an application once it is running. That shows that we don't really need these bloated OSes. Like for my personnal needs AbiWord is just as good as OpenOffice and Microsoft Office. Glad you enjoyed the little puppy. Another interesting distro is Darn Small Linux. It takes no time to download and is pretty complete considering it's size.

At least I show more interest in a PC and it's software than how many buttons and the color of the tower.
Another way of saying this is...
I am willing to learn a bit more and never be total satisfied with what I bought as I know (as others) that with PC's and that includes the Apple/Mac that there is more to be had. If one settles for what they have in hand with a PC, they settle for soon to be useless items........
And of course a window user I am, like 85 % of all PC users. Thanks for being so nice jram!
I would prefer that others with the knowledge answer this question. But maybe they agree with you buddy. And so I thought I shall give one more shot at getting an answer to this simple question.

mlurp...this runs from a cd that you create from an iso. no installation necessary. it can be installed but i don't know how to do that. i reckon you can install on an external drive and then boot that as per berton. to create the cd you have to download the iso then burn the iso to a cd then boot your computer from the cd. if you need a program to burn a cd there are a couple good free ones available. you can find them here; http://www.snapfiles...m/fwcdburn.html
i like "DeepBurner" and "CDBurner XP PRO".
P.S. it does not, i repeat, does not come with internet exploder. you'll have to use firefox, looool. just kidding buddy give it a try you'll like it.

My thanks gentelmen and jram! I shall try both ways. Just kidding JR. your a gentelman and of course a Mac nut and we all have a few screws loose. yours just dropped out and got lost. And the replacements aren't fine threads as they were once upon a time long ago in a land far away......
