My son did something to his computer which has caused it to boot to c:\Windows. Typing in "win" will then take it to Windows 98SE and it'll fire up normally. It's not a huge deal, but is somewhat annoying. Does he need to go in and edit the autoexec.bat?

It's hard telling what he did. He said something about a program that he needed to start in DOS. Initially it wouldn't even go to c:\Windows; it would just boot to c:\. I've found some info on the web that sounds like it solve the problem, but wanted to run it by some people I trust first!

Broni, thanks for the quick response. I will e-mail him and ask him to e-mail it to me. Won't be tonight as he is already in bed. 4:30 am for those Chrysler auto workers! I'll get back to you as soon as I can. This is from a screen shot.

Well, that was pretty quick for him! I forgot that he is off this week so he was up late and sent this after I went to bed. I'm going to post it "as is" with all the REMs etc. I don't see anything weird and the last 3 lines look like what they're supposed to. Maybe you can pick something up. How about the config.sys file? Would that help?

I just realized, that Win 98 deosn't need "autoexec", nor "config" at all.
It's just a leftover from previous Windows.
Go to "msconfig", and disable it from starting.
See what happens.

Now that's something I didn't know! I'll let him know and we'll give it a try. How interesting. I'll post back with what happens.

Just got this back from my son:

Well, that was waaaay too easy.......problem fixed. That all started when I was goofing around with some really old MSDOS programs. One of them must have reconfigured to start up in MSDOS since they won't run in Windows and I just never took the time to find the real problem. I wouldn't have known where to look anyway.

Thanks, Broni. It's not often things are that easy!!

Hi djhoeft...

Quote

The autoexec.bat and the config.sys were files created for MS-DOS and Windows 3.x as an easy solution of loading the files required for various devices as well as the operating system to properly run. These files are required for later revisions of MS-DOS and Windows 3.x to load. However, because Microsoft is trying to steer away from MS-DOS, these files are not required for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000 or Windows XP.
