I was going to run my security apps last eve and realizes the new modem the tech guy from charter.net installed hasn't a shut down button. I thought to ask before unplugging it. Why because I always shut down all my running programs. the same for installs of new apps. I first clean my OS and then shut down all apps. and do a restore point.
Any suggestions?

I have no shutdown on my Toshiba modem either. I unplug my Linksys router and modem before running maintenance than turn of machine plug router, modem back in let the modem do the data test and power up and away we go.

He tried to tell me over the 'phone but I couldn't get it so he had to come over. Turned out to be on the right of the monitor - apart from the menu. Does this help?

Just because most installs require one to. And one gets better maintenance with all running apps shut down. But you run a super fine PC, opppps sorry Mac!

fairlopgirl, my monitor is 5 + years old 19" gateway. The modem was installed several days ago. And are not sure about any modem menu. I can't make the connection but do thank you for your time and input.

I guess I will use John T's, method. But I am going to call the tech support people on this just to get more info.

Heck I couldn't get online a short while ago and so I did unplug the modem for a minute and then plugged it back in and wam here I am!
Checked the event viewer and wow, well you be the judge...
But then I also have by the Driver Agent thingy I posted 52% bad drivers. Yet it runs and will last till a newer PC becomes mine!
I don't bother with these as it runs and there are always work arounds... The other 2 event logs are OK. But Avast has an update which fails to D/L yet the definitions are up to date and I just check the Avast free D/L and I do have the latest so the event viewer is just not right.

You should clear your logs once in awhile.. Here is the one entry, it's Webroot garbage.. Most won't agree but Webroot stuff is turning into garbage, my pc runs much better with webroot programs off my machine. The avast error, did you happen to unplug your modem in those time frames?? Avast always checks for updates when you go on line and that could be it.. I know my AV logs a error when it can't update..

JR I have learned to tweak my Webroot spysweeper enough that I don't have any problems with it. It can be a bit of a resource hound but with 3gb of memory so far so good. The one thing that does get my dander up is the noftification for renewal. Mine was not due until June and they sent one already. I wrote them a love note asking if they were using new math for what equals a year of service. Doubt I hear back on that one.

By the way it rates pretty high and beat out the other product I use Counterspy.

I have never had spyware using Spy Sweeper, never had spyware when not using it.
I think it's a waste when using FF. I just use SpyDefense now, good enough for me.

Thanks for the info JR., John t. But that is web roots Window Washer as I dumped their Spy sweeper a long while back. So Any suggestion as to how to fix the window washer.
And yes I had to unplug the modem several times at charter.nets tech support suggestion so they could get it to reset at 768 KBPS and then boost it to 2.7 MBPS.
Avast is up to date and so are the definitions.

But like I said it don't mean nothing! The machine is running well and window washer is running fine. I can flush the washer logs if that might help.

This is the event log of ww.Secure.exe, if that helps. I can't seems to find Window washer Log file.

I'm not much help on this one mlurp. I am one of those that if the program is screwing up I do the famous uninstall reinstall, but making sure I go to the product support site for specifics to make sure I clean registry out as well. Than reload, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't.

If that's the case, don't bother looking at the logs until there is a problem, they can drive you crazy.. Event viewer is good but can cause needless worry. :good_luck:

John t, I to use that method, the reason for a "My Installed Apps" folder in My documents" with the D/L origional .exe file or Zip.
So you have helped my friend. The same as jram. I feel like he does the event viewer is a waste many times and I would delete it but forgot the method. It has never helped me solve any thing. And sure has been the sourse of many of my worries!
I agree JR. I need to just get rid of the event viewer, period. heck after 5 years M$ hasn't offered any return help from alll the info they have gathered from it as far a as I know.
Thats why my statement in the beginning it works and the event viewer is a waste.
Or something to that effect.

Oh yes JR., I was just kidding about that first Mac attack. I had to we all need some humor in our lives. I am sorry about it and hope they leave it alone from now on. Heck they haven't hurt my IE or Windows based PC, so they need to keep at what they are best at. Who knows the future. But what they need to do is attack the right Mac, the one with Donalds right after the Mac. And that clown guy with the red hair and funny socks. Ya his shoes are something also! he, he, he...

Those Mac fanboys need something to talk about, they are still in denial .. I have Norton and don't use Tiger so I have no problem. From what I've been reading, you have to give your password after double clicking on the file, you would have to ask yourself why before you were stupid enough to do this.
Event viewer has many uses, it's just sometimes can drive you crazy.

Yes your safe as John T, Lewis and most everyone at ths board reguardless of the OS they use. It is the those who don't care to learn security and have our e-mail addy, because they have their e-mail app set to auto record all received e-mail.

Event viewer is a good tool, but I don't need it. It hogs a large space on my HD and M$ hasn't any service to go with it in the last 5 years. So?It isn't worth it's weight in MB to me.
Any good way of sending it to the trash can?
