Thanks for the compliments guy's but I wouldn't say I'm the best. I'm still learning like everyone else. I would rather say..... SmartestComputing is the best, a place where we all can learn each and every day. :smiley_says_hello:

Gary is right on.  For a while, most WD drives are Single Master with no jumper.  But they offer the "Park" pos as a neutral storage place.  I too am baffled why the drive would be seen as a slave to CD-Rom and not Single master.  Hmmm, wonder if a new ribbon cable on the Pri channel would help? At any rate, slave wouldn't be my first choice for the faster, newer dive, but we are talking old rig !!  Glad your efforts were worthwhile, Gary !  rob

Rob and Gary, I hunted till I found this thread so I could follow up on it. Let me start out posting this screenshot again:

I have a computer in my shop today with a WD single drive installed. I tried removing the jumper that is parked as you guys explained also seen in #1 in the screenshot. That computer could not see the hard drive with that jumper configuration. I tried everything, the only way I could get it to boot was if I placed the jumper like #1 in the screenshot.
I built this computer about 18 months ago so it's not that old of an WD hard drive.

This is the first HD that I tried this with. I wonder if it was because I loaded windows while it was configured this way. I still haven't tried the "no jumper" method since this thread. I recently bought 20 Seagate's for bulk price so I haven't used many WD's lately. Any Thoughts?

A thought? It's been my experience that not all WDC HDD models use the same jumper scheme. All of the Caviar [haven't used other models yet] I've dealt with in many years did use No jumper for an only drive in the system unless using a Cable Select data cable with does require the CS setting for the jumper even though it was the only drive on the cable.

Looking at an 80GB and a 200GB WDC HDD label shows no neutral/parking position. It has CS on pins 1 & 2, Single or Master with no jumper, Master with Slave Present on 5 & 6 and Slave on 3 & 4.

"Park is usually 4-2, which is same as no jumper. rob

Yeah Berton, thats what I was thinking. From the very first time I started using the WD's, I've always parked that jumper that way because I always thought that was the single drive configuration. Rob and Gary brought that to my attention. I mostly use the Caviar's also. Here is the weird part, the sticker on this drive is exactly like the one you posted but this drive is not dectected by the bios if the jumper is removed.

That is weirs, Smokey. I use them exclusively at home, and have a choice usually of WD, Maxtor, Seagate (and a few years ago, Quantum) at work. I choose WDs at work when possible, and NEVER Maxtor. This same jumper scheme has been on WD drives for a very long time. Course, I have never used a WD drive larger than 120. I always park the jumper at 4-2 when it's the only drive. Like you said before, it interesting to see how the same things work for ifferent people ! HAND, rob
BTW, have you used the new WD passport Ext drives. They are pretty nice...all power comes from USB. I bought and use one at work... so much faster to BU to this than to CD-r. Been using Bart's PE.

Funny you should mention this because I had one in my hand yesterday but ended up getting an 300gig internal for my enclosure. I've had Bart's PE software for over a year now but never messed around with it yet.

I'm wondering if the drive that I mentioned is screwed up, just in case, I'm changing it out with another (single) WD drive that I know works with no jumpers.

The drive enclosures are very nice with more choices as you can put other drives in. I got a Muse at zopzoomfly for under 50 bucks that is tool-less and I can swap the HDDs. But it requires power and is big and clumsy (still very good), but the Passport is much more portable, but limited to 80G

I have 2 enclosures that I use. The one I use at home and my shop is big and a little clumsy as you mentioned but it is 300 gig. I also have a neat little 80 gig that is powered by a USB port. It uses a tiny laptop HD. It's about the size (length and width) of a pack of cigarettes and half as narrow. It' a Venus HD Enclosure and it's only 14.95 at newegg.
This enclosure is great for going on the road or service calls.

I just love all the little toys and new technology computing offers.

Yup, the new toys are soooo enticing !! Thnx for that info on the ext drive... I like it ! It's like my passport, but more flexible (if you have lappy HDDs sitting around !) It's basically like the Passport drives. The one thingy I really like with the Passport is it is rubberized... It sticks where you place it, making it harder to knock off.
I guess I was surprised that the USB2 ext drive is much faster than burning CDs with a int writer. But it is, and I guess the burning process really slows you down ! SeeYa, have a great weekend ! rob

You can install win 7 to drive C - vistabootpro does run under win 7 and it will just require some bootloader maintenance to see xp on dve Dafter installing win 7.
