I just bought an old 533 MHz computer on Ebay ,cost 10.95, for an old lady who uses it for email and playing simple games, the computer I'm replacing is a very old Gateway, I think 33 MHz, Question is on boot it says hit N to boot from network and then it boots to 98 if you don't hit N. I've looked in bios for something to turn off but can't find anything, can someone explain this.

Is that a new install of 98? Try to enter the bios and disable any NIC cards it has.

That probably isn't a Windows issue but in the BIOS. There should be a setting in the boot sequence to set the HDD [or floppy or CD] as the first boot device. I've seen "Boot from Network" available in a number of BIOSes. And it's possible the computer came from a company network and it was setup that way under terms of the contract with the builder/vendor of the computer.

I see that message all the time...

On some of our PC's here at work we use a 3com 10/100 3C905CX-TX-M external NIC card (most of our PC's are Dell's with Onboard NIC's). When any PC with this particular 10\100 card boots up the "N to boot from network" screen appears. We just ignore that screen and the boot process continues. I have also see this msg on older 3com 3C905 cards.

If I get a chance I will try to "Disable" the "Boot from Network" in the BIOS and let you know if the message goes away.

If it's not in use, you could just snatch it out of there.
