MORE BAD NEWS FOR VISTA PURCHASERS
Some of you may recall the debacle of the short life span of new Window's operating systems when we went from 98 (1998) to ME (2000) to 2000 (nine months later) and then to XP in 2001. Well it appears Microsoft is at it again.
I mentioned previously that the new operating system called "Vienna" will replace VISTA in two years (2009) but now it seems there will be an intermediate step first known as "Figi" to be released next year!

My advice? Don't buy a new computer for a couple of years; just upgrade your old pc. Today with Pentium IV 2.8G chips selling for $45.00, RAM at $25.00, even new motherboards for under $75.00, you can turn the "old clunker" into, if not a BMW, maybe a Lexus for under $200.00.

Since I got hosed on windows ME some years ago I take my time on upgrading. If a system is really good the outpouring of info will be there, if not than pretty much what I am seeing now, basic satisfaction but no dancing in the streets, LOL.

One small correction, Win2000 came out before WinME. File dates on my CD for Win2000 are 12/7/99 and files in the .cab files on the WinME CD are dated 6/8/2000.

WinXP 'broke' Microsoft's supposed schedule of a new Operating System every 18 months.
Since it's pretty much agreed and history shows that WinXP is the 'best of the bunch' maybe they should have left well-enough alone.
WinNT 4 came out in '96 but its replacement was nearly 4 years later.
There were 4 versions of Win95 from '95 through '98.
There were 2 versions of Win98 plus one Service Pack for the first.
Win95/98/ME were somewhat-parallel developments alongside WinNT/2000 with WinXP Home Edition and Professional being very close siblings. WinXP is the first where both home and business versions had NTFS-formatting available.
Since the Service Packs for Win2000 and WinXP essentially make a newer version of the OS it could be argued Microsoft's schedule is pretty much on track. WinXP has been out just over 5 years and has 2 SPs, SP1 dated 3/13/03 and SP2 dated 8/3/2004. SP1a can be disregarded as it only had JAVA removed due to a court settlement of a lawsuit. It seems like a longer time for SP2 to be out but WinXP was in Release Candidate status a couple of months before its final release.
Then there are the versions of WinXP Media Center Edition.
