I have Windows XP installed on a Dell laptop and a wireless router installed as well in the hope of adding a laptop to my home network. I have Zonealarm free installed on the laptop. A newsletter I subscribe to says addition of a third party firewall is unnecessary if Windows firewall is enabled. Agree or disagree? Thank you.

Your behind a router so windows firewall is enough. The only reason you would want a third party firewall like ZA would be to be notified that a spyware program or trojan is calling home. I just use the windows firewall on my pc & the Mac firewall on my Mac. I'am also behind a router. I let my spyware programs protect me.

I agree but also disagree...
The "Router + Windows Firewall" is great partnership but, yes there is a but, the only issue with Windows Firewall is that it does not tell you what programs are trying to call home. For instance you install a piece of freeware and don't read the EULA (End Users License Agreement) and the EULA states that another piece of software will be installed. This new, unknowingly installed by you, calls home to get updates and to send info about your surfing home. The Windows Firewall does not prevent this but if you were using software firewall like Comodo Firewall or Sunbelts Kerio you would get a pop up asking you if you want to permit this.
Again the "Router + Windows Firewall" is a great partnership. I just prefer the "Router + Comodo Firewall" combo.

Yes that is true of my Vista Laptop and I have no plans to change my "Router + Vista Windows Firewall" yet but the Windows Firewall Interface lacks the functions that a Software Firewall like Comodo or Kerio has.
You have to go through hoops..."Start button, Control Panel, Windows Firewall, then select "Allow a program through windows firewall" from there you have to click on the tabs...

Now the interface on the Comodo Firewall I'm using on my XP box is available with 1 click to an icon in my System Tray...

Lots of info to work with... http://www.smartestc...tyle_emoticons/default/smile.gif As I said at the top of this post...I have no plans to change my "Router + Vista Windows Firewall" at this time but I may do so in the very near future as I want to be more informed.
