My home province, Manitoba, had a new holiday (Louis Reil day) so I had Monday the 18th off and I put it to good use.
I recently purchase a refurbished Dell Optiplex 280 P4 2.8GHz with 512MB RAM. I downloaded and installed Ubuntu Linux 7.10 "Gutsy Gibbon". The install went flawless...very simple. The nice thing also is the CD is also live which means you can boot up with it and play around with out have to install it right away. Once your finished playing around with the "Live" session and you decide to install you just double-click the "Install" icon on the desktop and you get a "Graphical" installer wizard to help you through the process.
Anyways, I'll be playing around with it for a bit and trying to tweak it...

A caveat about the Kubuntu 7.10 LiveCD Edition of Ubuntu, it will not display the contents of an NTFS-formatted HDD. It's a bug in the LiveCD and so far is corrected in Kubuntu 8.04 Alpha 2 release.

However, that is an old page [2005] and I believe the references to NTFS need updating.

Actually Kent, I wasn't messing around that much anyway when my niece called and need a computer. I loaded Vista Ultimate on the Linux machine and sent it to her. I have a nice Dell Dimension I took in as a trade in. Maybe I'll load it on there. How are you doing? How are you doing with the "Terminal"? That's the part that turns me off about Linux...

Reminds me of DOS and openVMS (a database system we use at work). Just try to learn some compiling right now... http://www.smartestc...tyle_emoticons/default/smile.gif Linux does not have a CHM (Windows help file) viewer so I'm looking at downloading something that will view but it needs to be compiled.
I'm still a Windows man but it is fun to play with... http://www.smartestc...tyle_emoticons/default/smile.gif

So... I haven't been reading this forum lately, well, the other operating system one. We now have some linux folks out there? That's great news!!
As you might have seen on my post a ways back in here, I've been running it since that time. I don't do a lot with it, but I run a file server and a print server from it and it is really great for my purposes. The file server behaves as if it's on whatever computer I'm on, and printing from my old printer is so so much faster than going through a windows computer. I'm using a different distro than this one (which I think is the more popular one actually.) I'm using PCLinuxOS. It comes on a live CD as well. From the different versions I've used, there really doesn't seem to be a huge difference. They all have slightly different user interfaces, but for the most part, they all seem to behave the same.
It is a great way to put an old computer to new use!
Anyway, sorry for not keeping up on this forum. You can bet I will now to see if any more Linux topics come up :)
