Have a friend who needs little help. Here is what the problem is:
I am using my on screen keyboard because my NEW laptop keyboard wont work now. Have vista and have rebooted. When I left it to make dinner I just closed the lid putting it in hibernation. Came back and couldn't reply to emails. Rebooted....cant type anywhere notepad included. No spills.... hp dv2500. Tried the lock buttons looked for buttons on the sides n front .... Found a lock on front f6 but nothing happens.
Thanks for any ideas for her.

Hi Peggy...the odds are that the cable that connects the keyboard to the Laptop has become loose. It was probably loose from the manufacturer. On the Dell's that I work on it's just a thin ribbon cable...not sure what HP uses...I would assume the same method.
I've removed and replaced quite a few Laptop keyboards and it's not all that hard to do but since this is a new Laptop I would suggest that she not even try to fix it herself as she may void the warranty. Tell her to take it back to were she bought it as they will send it back or if they are a repair depot for HP they will fix it themselves.

Thanks, I passed along the info. Only problem that I see is that she is in Germany (Military) and might not be able to take it back where she got it. I did give her the link below, and told her if she want to try it, do it at her own risk. If she wasn't knowledgeable enough about it, then don't attempt it.

Here is the latest, knew she would have problems being stationed in Germany. This is the email I just got.............
I went and bought an external keyboard since my old one wouldn't work with the laptop. I contacted HP and they said to uninstall and reinstall my drivers. BUT I have to start in safe mode and that is kinda hard when your keyboard doesn't work so I can't use F8. I have tried it with the external and I just can't seem to get it to come up asking me if I want it in safe mode... . I ordered the computer through newegg.com and hp is telling me that I have to bring it to a German dealer since that is where we are and they won't ship the product back to us via APO. So fed up with that..same thing with my JVC DVD recorder!

Finally got her to the Safe Mode. Here is the email I got about what she is doing and any help would be appreciated please. First, this is how I got her into Safe Mode........
To use the System Configuration Utility method
Close all open programs.
Click Start, Run and type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK
The System Configuration Utility appears, On the BOOT.INI tab, Check the "/SAFEBOOT" option, and then click OK and Restart your computer when prompted.
The computer restarts in Safe mode.
Perform the troubleshooting steps for which you are using Safe Mode.
When you are finished with troubleshooting in Safe mode, open MSCONFIG again, on the BOOT.INI tab, uncheck "/SAFEBOOT" and click OK to restart your computer
Now what she responded..........................
Thank you. I ran the steps hp told me to and when I got to step 2: uninstall the synaptic touch pad drivers I didn't see the driver under the imaging devices category like HP said it would be under. Does that mean the touch pad driver disappeared? And would that effect my keyboard also? I noticed 2 other things when I was at the system config screen.
1 - under start up there are quite a few things there that are not Microsoft and/or windows related (that I know of lol) listed. Should I close out the ones that I know and that I don't want starting when I start the computer. Are these the things that run in the background and cause it to be slower?
2 - under the general tab it is checked for "selective start up w/ load system services and load start up items checked". Should normal start up be checked instead?
Thank you thank you thank you for all your time and patience.
