Those darn windows that allow you to change settings, for example, you know the ones that you can't drag the edges of to change the size so that one can see everything that's usually cut off on the right side and/or the bottom.
Is there any possible way to change them? I'm assuming they're hard coded into the OS. But just possibly there might be something in the registry that I could change to resize a particular window.
I spent almost an hour on their nickel with a M$ guy, you know where, and supriisingly he was very easy to understand, but he had no solution either. He finally concluded that there wasn't anything he could do to help me.
We tried changing font size and all kinds of different tricks but basically everything we tried changed sizes of icons and text, but the contents of the window was still cut off on the right and bottom. He told me it was my monitor and driver combo and I told him that I felt he was completely wrong on that because everything else is the right size, shape and the contents of the windows is all there. In other words it's never M$'s fault, it's got to be something on my end.
We were working only with the window that pops up when you click on the Display settings icon after rt clickiing the dtop and selecting Personalize.
Any ideas or help with this "puzzlement"?
Dick

I thought I'd better add a screen shot to make clearer what I mean.

Hello Daffy...
The Microsoft guy probably already mentioned it but in case he didn't, lowering your resolution will make those windows larger.

Here's what that window looks like at your recommended resolution.
BTW the M$ guy had me try that. The window got bigger as you can see, but the contents went along for the ride and didn't end up being small enough to fit. I have insured that I have the latest driver for the video card and it is installed and apparently running OK.

Thanks fellows. Any other ideas?

Slide that slider all the way over to the right. I use 1600x1200... I can see your icons in the back ground, their still giant using 1440x900.

Smokey:
The icons were large because that was a screen shot at the resolution recommended by the other fellows.
The slider won't go any higher than the 1680X1050. I can't get your numbers.
Since the last post by me, I did go in and reinstall the driver to make absolutely sure I've got the latest and even went so far as to download once more the latest and install from it. The old drivers were removed first and a reboot followed. The Wizard was cancelled and the driver loaded from the exe file I d/led. The only diff is that now the settings window only displays one monitor rather than two with the grayed out one in the previous screen shots.

Are you running any software that is altering your default Vista display settings like WindowsBlinds? Has this also been an issue? If not when was the first time you noticed this issue?

He can't change to 1600x1200, because he has wide screen monitor.
Possible options for him are:

dobhar: Not running Windows Blinds, the only thing odd ball I've got is LogonStudio which changes the Logon/logoff screen.
Broni: It also happens with at least one more window. I can't recall which one but when I find out I'll let you guys know.
The problemn started from the git go when I did a clean install of Vista on a separate HDD about a week ago. I'm not sure however, if it was also there before the install of SP1, because I updated Vista two days after I got it up and running. The update included the install of SP1.
I'm starting to believe that these system windows are hard coded as to what size they should be and it may not be possible to change the size.

Most likely, they're hard coded.
You may try Repair option, as described here: http://www.bleepingc...utorial148.html

That's not true Broni. The resolution range has a lot to do with his video card also. I have 2 computers on the same "wide screen monitor" and the resolution range is completely different.

As far as him using the windows vista repair option, I wouldn't do that unless you have a big problem. I DO NOT like the way vista does those repairs using the install disk.

Daffy, What video card do you have? Check in device manager to see what date is on the driver tab for the video card.

Is this the driver that you're using? If not, try it.

And this problem didn't exist until you installed sp1? Check you windows update history (on the windows update window) and see if you have any nvidia updates that were installed? I would consider removing sp1 if you don't find anything in your update history.

I understand what you're saying, Smokey, but...
His 1680x1050 gives him 16:10 ratio, which is wide screen ratio.
1600x1200 gives a ratio 4:3 (16:12), which is regular screen ratio. When applied to wide screen won't it give him slight "long face" effect?

I never tried Vista repair, yet, but there are two options there: going through "Install", which I understand is like installing over the top, and "Repair your computer", which is like "Repair" option in XP.
Which option are you talking about, and I'd be very glad, if you can elaborate on downsides.

Oh yeah. There is known SP1 screwup regarding nVidia drivers.

Broni:
I'm not really sure whether the problem was there before or only after the install of SP1.
There is no reference to any nvidea stuff in the updates and besides I wouldn't allow that kind of update in from MS. I do custom updates and never have the M$ driver updates installed.
At any rate, I tried to uninstall SP1 and got an error message that not all the updates were removed.
You asked if it the problem occured in other windows and I found another one when trying to play with changing the DPI setting to see if that helped. Which it didn't.
Smokey: You remarked about my icon size still being in another size and I got to thinking. I changed the icon size to classic size and that made no difference.
I've set my dtop icons to be medium size. It makes them easier to see for me.
Here's a screen shot of another of the windows that doesn't show all the info.

Attached Image: window2.jpg

I'm wondering if there is a different driver for the monitor and if that would help.
I will check into this and get back.
Dick
