I have a Hong Kong (thats where it was bought and shipped from} PCMCIA USB 2.0 + 1394 Firewire combo card. I was gonna install on a friends old Compaq Armada running Windows 95. When pulling software cd out of envelope found it had a crack in it. Can't use it. This is what card looks like.

I already know that drivers for this card are used on 98 and up windows systems. I have a 98 O/S that I can install on top of her windows 95. I just need the link for whoever made this @#*** card so I can download them to floppy or cd and try to give her some usb and firewire options on her laptop.

Is there any manufacturer listed?
If not...
Since this card is not compatible with Win 95, I'd install Win 98SE, plug it in, and run Everest. It may detect what kind of card it is.

[attachment=48527:attachment] Since posting this I actually received an anwer to my email to a seller on ebay with these cards and he sent me a link for all kinds of drivers for chinese made hardware. I downloaded a RAR file for the card mentioned and burned to cd and tested on my laptop running windows xp but for some reason windows couldn't extract the RAR file on cd to load the driver. Do I have to open the RAR file first before burning?

It shouldn't matter, but you can try, at least to see what's inside.

:bald_head: OK, got everything working but the usb 2.0 in device manager. I get a code 10 that device won't start. Used a usb 1.1 flash stick to test every thing else and it pulled up my photos after recognizing pen drive. I don't have anything to test firewire capabilities but I think they will work too because of what it shows in device manager under IEEE 1394 section. Don't know why I'm getting code 10 as I've tried shutting down computer and reseating card. Have uninstalled and reinstalled usb 2.0 numerous times with external power cord plugged into card and not plugged into card. Makes no difference what I do. Shows files and drivers being installed when doing add hardware wizard and then the message windows is" there is a problem starting the device, code 10. Click finish to troubleshoot", did everything suggested in support, no change. :bald_head:

I should also state this is being tried out on an IBM 390E, 366 mghz processor, 128 mb ram, windows XP pro. The drivers are good for windows 98,up to XP

I think, we have to eliminate the card being bad. Any chance to try it on another computer?

My guess is there is a conflict between that USB 2.0 card and the old motherboard which doesn't support USB 2.0. The motherboard pre-dates usb 2.0

You probably hit it right on the nose there Smokey. The card is going into an even older laptop. A Compaq Armada 1540DM. I'll be happy if it works giving her USB 1.1 capability. There are no USB ports on this laptop and this card should supply 2 of them. I know that you work on these things Smokey and if you are interested, I can supply you with that Chinese Driver Link if you want it I can PM it to you.

An issue with Win95 is that only the last two versions, Win95B and Win95C, supported any form of USB. The first two versions, Win95 and Win95A, did not. Win95B and Win95C supported only USB 1.0 and USB 1.1, most Notebooks of the time didn't have the ports although Macintosh was bigger into USB and Firewire/IEEE1394 back then. Even the first two versions of Win98, Win98 and Win98 w/SP1, supported only USB 1.1 with Win98SE needed for support of USB 2.0 drivers.

Good morning Broni, I mentioned in one of the earlier posts that the IBM was just being used as a testbed to check the functionality of the card and drivers that were supplied to me before I install it on this friends Compaq. I have the Windows 95 upgrade software and also a 98 O/S disk with key if my friend wishes to go there. She likes Windows 95 because she is comfortable and familiar with the O/S plus her laptop won't run anything much bigger other than 98 or Linux Puppy, which I also have, but she said she would be lost trying to run Linux. I thank everybody for the help and suggestions and like you say Broni, "Seize the Day"
