basically I have rid myself of the known virus's but am still unable to perform a download. i use vista Home premium, AOL 9.0VR and now Firefox3 rather than i.e.7.
I click to download, it goes right through the process green bar expanding left to right, checks for virus at end then just closes the window rather than allow me to open the file. it seems size related as I can get AOL to download and open some smaller files but it is very confusing to me?
I have checked the download options and it is in the allow position.

I select the location, usually the desktop click start the green progress bar starts, goes from let to right, then the box closes and there is no download, even when I do a search for the file it is not listed in the search.
Really frustrating!

Correct, the only option I get is the green progress bar on files that will not download.
I do get the window you showed above on the files that will download however. I seem to be better downloading at home on my own router than the works router, does that make any difference?

Derek MC: On Firefox Page Left click Edit>Left click Preferences>Below Downloads you'll see a box labeled "close it when downloads are finished". Make sure that box doesn't have a checkmark in it, if it does left click on box to uncheck it. Click close and you are done . Then try downloading file or whatever and when done in the bottom right hand corner of your screen you will get a notification box like you would in Windows when you plug a USB stick in saying "Download completed". The Download box with the green bar should still be open and won't go away till you hit the close button. This way you have 2 ways of telling the download is complete.
Now I forgot to tell You is while you have the preferences window open for firefox do you see the line______" save file to". Click the browse button next to the bar like window and it will show" desktop "as one of the options .Select that option. That way the file will be in plain sight of your desktop. Also when download window opens it gives choices of" open file","save file",make sure you click on save file. Hope this helps and good luck.

Derek, You never answered Broni's question. Can you download normally if you use IE7? If not, it's a problem with Vista. If it does download using IE7, it's a problem with Firefox.

Yes, Don't do your testing at work, they may have a download size limit set on their router/routers. This is common practice in most offices.
