Hi Guys,
Please look again at the attachment it is selected to save the document, not open it.

Smokey,
I was able to download with Firefox only, not with either AOL or IE7 however now even FF will not perform downloads. It goes all the way through the process to the checking for virus box then when it leaves the file visible, when I right click on the file the open it option is greyed out.
if I search in the C drive the file does not show either.
On Friday I tried to download crackberry ringtones via the usb to my blackberry but not one of them (all small 3>800Kb files) would download yet every one of them look like it hd completed the process.

It sounds like the Vista Installer or a related file got damaged by the virus. Try the sfc /scannow command (have your vista install disk handy) to repair the corrupted file.

Instructions here.

I was waiting for you to post the results of the SFC scan as was mentioned in Post #22...

This statement suggests that it's a Windows problem, not a browser problem. That's why I suggested a SFC scan.

Sorry Smokey,
I ran the sfc scan it identified some errors fixed a few but was unable to fix some of them. I am I think needing a system disc which I was never given with this pc when I inherited it, and by now the virus will have destroyed the section of the programme controlling downloads, so I am at a loss on this one now unless I can get an un-molested system disc from somewhere.

Derek, before we go any further, disable all the security programs that you have on that computer including the firewall, antivirus, antispyware programs etc. Then try to download something but try to download something new that you haven't tried before like the file below.

This is a screen capture program that you can use to capture and post your screen shots.
Note: Always save your screen shots as .jpg's or .gif's NOT .bmp's, this forum does not support .bmp files.

Also post the specs of that computer (make, model). If it's a Dell, post the service tag number (it will be located om a sticker on the outside of the computer case)

Hi Smokey,
OK I turned off windows firewall and defender is just doing it's own thing. the laptop is a Vaio a VGN-NR21J, and needless to say I couldn't download the capture.zip.

I do think I had a virus sorted by broni but it has attacked my registry and the inability to download is the net result. I have a twin to this in my office bought the same day, if I can work out how to get the system disc off it I will reload windows and that should sort it.
i can now do some downloads on AOL only.
If you need any numbers off this PC let me know but I think now I need a vista partial reload

I kinda agree in that the virus probably caused the download problem but I'm not so sure that it caused a problem in the registry. What was the name of the virus that infected you?

Derek, this is just a hunch. Open IE >> tools >> internet options >> open the advanced tab and hit the restore settings button and then hit the reset button. When it's complete restart IE and try to download something using IE as the download browser.

Tried as you said but still not downloading.
The green progress bar travelled across as the file seemed to download but then before the open box it simply vanished. I tried to save to desktop but it wasn't there or in the recent download folder either

Did your sfc scan list the errors that it couldn't fix? If so, please post them.

Do you use a router?

How are you connected to the internet, DSL, Cable or (AOL) dialup.

It gave me a location to get the list of errors however no matter what I try all i se is an "access denied" meessage when I try to open the file of errors.
Curiosly enough now however. I have just added office 2003 in place of Openoffice and have no bother downloading my emails with some very large attachments too, on outlook. this has left me baffled!

Does this make any sense to you?

Nothing makes sense once you've been infected. I usually spend 30 minutes trying to fix PC's after a bad infection has taken over. It's not worth all the trouble.

Even if you fix the download problem something else will go wrong next week. It's time to cut your loses. Backup everything that you want to keep and reinstall windows.

If you go to this Sony support site you can do a live support chat, just ask them for a new Vista recovery disk. A phone number can be found on that site in case you're more comfortable using the phone.

Note: Sony's USA support may tell you that you will have to contact their European support division because your computer was bought overseas.
