Here's what happens. On my 2nd computer if the wireless network does not connect, I usually right
click on it & select "repair", however when I did that, it hung up on renewing Ip address & then
monitor went blank & windows restarted. Windows then would then "check disk". Sometimes it was
the C drive, other times would be D, E, etc... I thought it had something to do with the wireless
network because when I opened Network Connections, it told me it could not find any wireless
network. So - I tried to re-install the wireless card, etc...When I went to put in the driver for the
card, windows would shut down & restart. Then of course the checking Disc thingy continued. Then
when I tried couple different things, windows would shut down/restart at almost any click of the
mouse. (Drove me up a tree). So I done a Windows Repair on my C partition. When all done,
(after checking the disks several times & restarting, etc) Found it was doing the same thing.
In frustration seeing I could not fix, I hooked up my 2nd hard drive (which I had just cloned a few
days ago), - so far - all seems to be working.
Think the Hard Drive has gone "South" ?

Hi Jim.... Probably. Since you have the cloned drive working, run the diagnostic program by the manufacturer of you hard drive. What brand and model hard drive do you have?

Boy - am I losing it - Smokey,Broni, its Western Digital Caviar WD800JB. Can't remember when I started
to use this disc as my main one. I downloaded the WD dIagnostic tools. I downloaded it in both
DOS & Windows for running. NADA - if I booted to the floppy drive, it said something like it could
not copy a certain file & aborted. I also tried booting to my I drive (cd) but it would not work either.
Windows would start & then shut down.... Well, now I just formated my C drive & gonna install
new windows xp on it & see what happens....Geeze :head_wall:

Well, after clean install of Windows, seemed to work ok - no shutting down/restarting. I then installed
Ghost & restored my C partition to a gho. file from couple days ago. (Took me till 2am) . Then I
checked out the restored C partition, seems to work ok - not shutting down/restarting, etc - so far.
I just can't figure out why the "repair" of XP didn't work - something musta really been screwed up
on the C drive. Go figgure huh ?

I meant to say that the hard drive passed all tests from the Western Digital Diagnostic tool which I
ran after installing new xp.

It could of been and probably was a driver conflict with some of the software that was installed. A repair install only replaces windows files and components. Download Prime95, and run the stress test for a couple hours to check the stability of the hard drive.

Well Smokey - ran that Prime 95 twice in 2 days - passed all tests. The only differences in my 2
computers (as far as programs go), I ran the Windows Live One Care on the computer which I had
problems for a couple of days and I downloaded COMODO Anti-Virus on it also. My ISP QWEST
used to give McAfee Virus Scan & Firewall but they switched to One Care. I ran One Care on
this rig for a couple of hours but didn't like the way it tried to take over and then un-installed same.
However on the other computer, One care done several things, like remove unnecessary files
and someother stuff. One care also uninstalled several programs on the computer which I didn't
like so I got rid of it on that one also - & when I re-installed programs that One Care
uninstalled, the problems seemed to start. Coincidence ? If not One care then had to be the
COMODO Anti-virus because those 2 are the only differences in programs/utilities between these
2 rigs. Anyhoo - all seems to be working fine - so far.http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/public/style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif

I'm glad things are working out for you Jim. I've never used One Care so I don't know anything about it. Doesn't One Care include an anti-virus? If it does, why did install another anti-virus on the same computer?

I personally think the whole security issue with Windows is blown out of proportion. I just use the windows firewall, windows defender, avast and Comodo's BOClean. I don't listen to all the so called security experts. I got tired of doing all the updates, upgrades. scans and whatever. I'm convinced that the best and easiest protection is a cloned hard drive or a great up to date backup.

Smokey, is that the free Avast or Pro? I used Avast Home for a long time and it got to where I could not update it. But, just wondering.

Hi Kenneth
Avast Pro, I like it so much I paid for the subscription. That's unusual for me because I don't usually pay for any software that I use. WOOPS! Maybe I shouldn't say that out loud...

Thanks Smokey. I may try that. I was using the free Bit Defender and liked it and paid for the subscription and not happy with it. It is so big and bloated that I just don't like it. All I wanted was an anti virus. :FU:

Smokey - Ya One care has F/W, Anti-Virus & more. The "More" is what turned me off of it - No way
(that I found) to just use the f/w & anti-virus & turn off the other junk. I Un-installed the One Care
before I d/l & installed the Comodo Anti-virus (beta). I am using the Avast (free) anti-virus on
this rig - seems to work just fine.

You can't run two AV programs at the same time.
