I have a Dell, Precision 360, that used to have Windows Server 2003 installed.
I installed SP2 (Dell), and have had a few problems,
some of which I have resolved :dancing_dude: ed.
I put a Samsung HDD in her, model #SP0802N/P, PATA, 80GB, 7200 RPM.
When I check the GB's, it only shows 31 GB's.
During install of SP2, I got a message saying that I had a partition that would not let me install, so I followed the instructions and put in a new partition. :oh_Canada:

Happy Thanksgiving to my American friends.

Why don't you remove all partitions, and format, first?

I agree..... It sounds like you are just creating new partitions and leaving the old ones there to cause trouble.

Follow the THESE INSTRUCTIONS <---- Link to instructions) to preform a "Clean Install". When you get to the 5th screenshot (of the instructions) you will see all of the partitions on your computer. Repeat deleteing the partitions until you only see one partition. Your 80gb hard drive will show up as about 74.5 gigs.

Could be the BIOS supports only to 32GB. Could be the limitation of Win2000 and WinXP in that they cannot create or format partitions over 32GB regardless of what the BIOS supports.

Per Berton's comments...Check your BIOS Version compared to the latest version on Dell's Website for your PC...

Go to Dell.com - Divers & Downloads, enter your Service Tag (from your PC). Make sure to choose WinXP for OS.

Looks like the latest for the Dell Precision 360 is A08

The computer in question was a server that was manufactured in 2003 or later.

The hard drives that were offered by Dell at the time were larger than 32gb. I believe that the bios (even if they were the "first released" bios for the 360) should support HD's above 32gb's.

:wow: Thank you all for your input.
From your responses it looks like I should get rid of the partitions, first, and see if that solves my problem.
GREAT BOARD !!!

Just follow instructions from Smokey's link in reply #3, and you'll be fine.

Is it possible that the jumpers on the SATA drive that failed were moved/switched around? That's your problem. Check the drives install instructions for the proper jumper settings.

I rarely use the Samsung drives anymore but if I remember correctly the bottom row of jumpers will limit the size of the drive. If I'm right, all you have to do is remove any jumpers on the bottom row.

Broni, Great site,
I went through the same procedure from Smokeys link. It worked with another HDD. I am happy with having 1 drive working, this is a "work in progress". I got a bunch of PC's from work, that were destined for the garbage, and took them home.

Smokey, Yup, the Samsung had the potential to restrict the HDD to 32GB, I only saw one jumper that made the HD a slave.

No big deal, I have enough parts. Just learning.

Thanks[size=6]

Fenix, One jumper configuration is why it's restricted to 32gb. No jumpers will make it a slave that is unrestricted.

Smokey,
I removed the jumper from the HDD. Your diagram was "much" better than the one on the hard drive, as a noobie, it was a bit confusing.
When I did, it was still showing 32GB's, so I reinstalled XP, and made a new partition.
Now my HDD is showing 72 GB's, with XP Pro. installed.

Thank You, Smokey, Broni, et al :smiley_says_hello:
