This is a two part question. Just a moment ago, and this has happened before, I was getting ready to send an email with an attachment of a photo I had done and this error message popped up not letting me even check to see if I had copied the right photo. Shortly afterwards, I got another, "Outlook Express has encountered and Error and needs to close" warning. Any ideas what's going on here and why I can['t open my own jpg file? Someone sent me a photo earlier today and I couldn't open it either-same error message as mine.

I.E. and O.E. are together.Do a sfc /scannow and that should repair O.E.Then maybe that will fix your second problem
Thanks JRAM for the new Computer.

Save photo to your computer, and then try to open it.
As for sending...run CCleaner to get rid of temp files.

Broni-The photo is on my computer. I was the one that sent it in an attachment. I couldn't readily open it to see if I had sent the right one and when I did I got that pop up. I just retried to send my sister and email and attached a photo from My Pictures Folder and got the attached pop up. I selected "Select the program from a list" and I just just chose Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and of course the picture appeared. That's what it should have done in the first place-show me my own attached picture without the box popping up. That's what I can't figure-why should if pop up and give me a choice to begin with. It should have just showed the picture.

OK-I tried it again and the same thing happened except this time worse. I clicked on the photo attachment I had entered in the email and got a "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem...." then Dr Watson's Postmortem showed up. what's going on with that? Further checking it out there was an "oxc0000005" code listed. these are the boxes that popped up....This has occured whenever I try to open an attachment I added myself to an email.

After you did this:

Quote

I selected "Select the program from a list" and I just just chose Windows Picture and Fax Viewer
did you put a checkmark into box "Always open...."?

I think so Broni but I couldn't swear by it. Oddly enough when I shut down last night, a pop up occurred that I didn't have time to read as it was only up about half a second but it said something about "REGEDIT.EXE-Initiation Failed..." that's all I could read.

I just checked and I do have the box checked and it will now open the photo but what's with the errors and the Dr. Watson Postmortem thing? Is there a registry problem with some .dll file?

Maybe you could take a look at my HiJackthis log and see if anything looks funny when you can.

Forget Dr. Watson. It's a waste of time.
Pictures now open, so what is your other current problem?
I saw your HJT log. I replied there.

I knew it was a debugger but it tells me nothing. The other problems is Windows Explorer and Outlook Express crashing after receiving the "...needs to close" notification. Happens at least once a day. The other possible problem is at shutdown I can just barely make out(because it's not up long enough) a box that pops up for maybe 1/2 second at shutdown that says something about REGEDIT.EXE and then under it something about Initiation failed. Is this a registry problem?

Did you check Event Viewer for more info about crashes?

I haven't used that in so long I forgot how. When I open it and click on System Error Records or Application Error Records-Open Log File, it just takes me to My Documents.

OK-Figures it out. There seems to be quite a few errors involving Telephony as I disabled several years back. It served me no purpose.

Under Applications there's quite a few errors for Ci Service and application hangs (fault bucket?) There's a lot of those yellow triangular exclamation marks further down the list as well.

Go Start>Run, type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK.
Have Windows CD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD.
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll simply quit, without any message.

I tried that last night but couldn't locate the disk. Now I found two-the Resource Cd and the Reinstallation CD that has SP1 on it. The ResourceCD with diagnostic utilities is the one you're talking about I assume. Haven't done this in years.

I assume, Resource CD would be your drivers CD, so no.
Reinstallation CD won't work, either. It'll return the computer to its original state, wiping out everything.
You need Windows XP CD.

Can't locate it Broni. I found everything else including Works Suite and Santa Cruze but no XP CD...guess I'm dead in the water on that one.

Ask around. You can do it with borrowed CD.

David, which service pack do you have on that computer 1, 2 or 3? XP Home or XP Pro?
