WOW-That's a big file. I'm downloading it now-thanks Smokey. I'll give it a try now.

Just let me know when you're finished David so I can deactivate it.

It still has 25% to go yet...does it matter where I unzip it?

OK-all done.

No, It's a zipped .iso file so you will have to convert it to a bootable install disk.

It reads as xphome.sp2.zip is why I asked. That's the way it shows on my desktop.

OK-I've got a CD with XP home burned and when SCF/SCANNOW asked for the disk I put it in and got this box below. What to do now? As you can tell, I've never used this before.

David, When that window opens, just close it. This is the command. Don't forget the space.

I'll do that when I get home this evening, Smokey. Many thanks for your help. We have to go to bed with the chickens having to get up at 4:30am here. Perhaps running this will locate the problem(s).

I don't know why it's sfc case only, but it actually works with "space", or no "space".

What I'm still wondering about is whether I ever had an installation CD or not. XP Home was on the computer when I got it and I don' tthink I ever had an XP disc. I have a "RE-installation CD but not an XP disc per se. Either way, I have one now.

When I tried to make the disc Nero wouldn't let me as there was a box with a tick in it that said something like, "This is not the disc that came with your computer and it is being blocked to protect your computer." I just unchecked it and then was able to make the disc.

Sorry to disagree with you Broni but it won't work without the space. Without the space it can't locate sfc.exe.

Without the space (Vista);

With the space (Vista);

XP without the space;

With the space;

This is becoming a real pain in the a**. I have to keep inserting the disc and still after 15 minutes am not even 1/4th the way there. It keeps telling me to insert disk when it's already there spinning. It'll run a few seconds and then the box pops up again telling me to insert CD. I'll eject and try again and get the same pop up requesting the CD. Am I doing something wrong here? You can see by the attached how far I've gotten in about 15 minutes.

I can't delete the welcome window in post #26 I only have the choices shown or I can exit. I chose to exit since I couldn't get rid of it otherwise.

I have no clue why it's happening, but it happened to me on one laptop, I was working on.

I hope this helps someone in the future (maybe me again). I took the disk out of E:/ drive and put it in D:/ drive and it worked!! It immediately started the scan process and finished and then just went away. I guess I assume at this point it found no problem? I still can't figure why it didn't work in E:/ drive-my CD/RW drive.

One CD/DVD drive is all a computer needs. Two cd drives just cause trouble. When ever I work on someones two CD Drive computer I always disconnect the second drive. You should do the same David. There is no benefit at all with a second cd drive.

Smokey-One's for DVD's and the other is a CD/RW drive. The DVD player is the one that worked while the other I always use didn't for some reason. That's probably the first time in several years it's been used as I don't watch DVD's on the computer-or burn them since it's just a DVD-ROM. It just came originally with the system.

David, The DVD drive is probably has the jumper set so it's the master, that's why it worked. If you don't use it you could probably disconnect it and set the CD burner as the master.

Note: When I mentioned that two drives can cause trouble, I was referring to two burners. This does not include your configuration so if you want to leave your two drives the way they are now that should be ok.
