this morning when I went to check e-mail I clicked on the outlook express icon and the internet properties box showed up. I look under the program tab and under "e-mail" is blank. I think this should say "outlook express" or am I wrong? I can get to outlook express by going through the help section and opening it from there. How do I get "outlook express" to show up under "e-mail" if that is the problem? if that isn't the problem what do I need to do?
thanks
steveo
I should add the drop down arrows don't work in the program tab so that means nothing is there

Outlook Express should show as a choice in Control Panel, Internet Options, Tools, Programs tab. OE is, by default, installed with Internet Explorer which in turn is, by default, installed with WinXP.
In OE's Tools, Options and the General tab check that OE is set as the "default Mail handler". Then check IE's Tools, Internet Options, Programs tab for the entry. May have to first close both then reopen.

the defaults won't stay set for some reason. I did a system restore to yesterday when everything was working just fine and that didn't help. I can get to outlook express but it is a pain in the butt to get there going through "help". I'm not sure what to do now

Reregister Outlook Express
Damaged or missing entries in the Windows registry can prevent Outlook Express from being recognized as the default e-mail client. That it turn can cause odd behavior when replying to a newsgroup message or clicking an e-mail link on a Web page. A simple procedure causes Outlook Express to rewrite its main registry keys and so corrects such issues.
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type msimn /reg, and then click OK.
(Note that you will not see anything happen.)
3. In Internet Explorer click Options on the Tools menu.
4. Click the Programs tab and select Outlook Express as the default e-mail client and as the default news client. You can change those later if you wish.
