This is about an old problem that I've had for ages. It's the icons in the volume control panel that looks strange. I probably brought this on myself by installing Windows Media Player Classic in some form. I don't remember how. I have had Real Alternative, K-lite Codec Pack, other codec packs and the likes installed but they are gone now. (Or are they?)

This here is a screenshot of the problem in the volume control panel. I always access it by clicking the little speaker icon in tray:

And here a screenshot from WMP's entries in Secunia - why do I have both a 5 and a 6? None of them appears in Add/remove programs. Is this normal?:

I have done a lot to try to normalize the icons in the volume control panel but to no avail: Tweak IU, chkdsk, scannow, reinstalled WMP 11 and I even ran a repair install of XP Home.

Suggestions are more that welcome...

They are the Windows Media Player Classic...Installed with the Codec package. I installed a Codec package and have the same thing...

Yes, but that's the problem. I have uninstalled the codec pack. I have also uninstalled Windows Media Player Classic. How do I remove the remains?

These icons looks like something from win 95. And I recall a time when the loudspeaker icons displayed in newer design? Like the tray icon does?

(Edit: have XP Home)

Well OhDear...I don't know what to tell you except that as far as I am concerned those are the default icons...I work in an IT dept and take care of hundreds of WinXP PC's. Now with that being said we run WinXP "Pro" at work not "Home" so unless "Home" has different icons than "Pro" (which I doubt) then the pics of the sound icons that both you and I have posted are the default.

This is from my PC at work and I do NOT have any Codec package installed...I also checked 2 other computers running WinXP

I wondering if your thinking about the sound control in Control Panel...It has different Icons...

I did some "Googling" and every picture I found is the same as what we both posted. If you do a Google search on"WinXP Home Volume control pictures"...

Link after link shows the volume control per our pics...

Yes, I'm beginning to think you're right. Quite strange. I was so sure, that I remembered having seen other icons there. Sorry about that.

What about the 3 WMP entries, then. I realize that I should have one for the old default player, that Microsoft insists that we keep installed. And one for WMP 11. But the third one - should it be there?
