It was searching on line for an answer to my problem that I came across this Forum.
It was reading a lot of the posts that I decided to seek help from people that obviously know a lot more than me.
I was given a super computer (now called NEW) by a relative (fast powerful 2xprocessors 3GB Ram 500GB on 2 HD) etc, etc.
A gratefully accepted must-have considering my 5yr old puter of the moment. (now called OLD)
I have a 10M cable modem on OLD and the whole computer works and serves me well.... and still does at the moment.
I cleaned up NEW and reformatted the HD's and re-partioned them, set up my XP on it and transferred some useful progs across using a mem stick. Not too much. I wanted a fresh start.
I can use it excellently as a normal computer with pics, music, files, etc.
Then I tried to get on line. Nothing.
I spoke to the cable ISP provider tech people and they worked out that the problem was with the computer. They maintained that I can get online no matter what computer I plug in. As long as the computer agrees. :-)
I have discovered by trial and error that there is a world of physical and IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, DHCP and DNS servers.
Apparantly NEW knows nothing of these things and refuses to shake hands with anything.
Question? What can I do?
I went to the local PC World and all they wanted to do was sell me a new puter. A boffin who could possibly help me was off sick.
The salesman had no idea if there was anything I could buy that would fix the problem. I should wait for Boffin.
Is there anything I can do or buy to repair this problem? I know there has to be an answer.
Thanks for reading all this. John.

Since you have two computers, I assume, you're using router to split the connection, correct?
Or you just unplugged the old computer, and plugged new one into the modem?
What computer brand, and model is it?
After installing XP, did you install all necessary drivers?
Are there any errors reported in Device Manager?
1. Click Start>Run (Start>"Start search" in Vista).
2. Type in (or copy and paste):
cmd /c ping google.com>%temp%\$.$¬epad %temp%\$.$
and press Enter.
3. Notepad will open.
4. Copy all text in Notepad ([Ctrl-A], then [Ctrl-C]), and then post it (paste = [Ctrl-V]) in your next reply.

hi Penthawk, first thing... did you check your network card to see if it's blinking green?
also, if your are connected to a router, are both computers connected to the router or is one of them wireless.
what is the names of the router, wireless access point, wireless cards do you have and how many.
This way I can help you too. you did say you have cable?
can you get connected to the internet with one of the computer?
