Yep, I got myself some cheap upgrades to Windows 7. Got the student edition for a measly $30 :) Sometimes it's nice to work for a university :)

Anyway, When I initially installed Vista on my PC over 2 years ago, I bought the 32 bit version. I guess I was just afraid of drivers and the like. It did end up biting me a few times where I could run some software at the highest resolution because that was only available for the 64 bit version of Vista. Bah! I was always sorry I didn't go with 64 bit. Last Jan I built my wife a new PC and put Vista 64 on it for her. It has been perfect for her!

Anyway, I installed Windows 7 64 bit Upgrade on my computer last Friday. It went perfectly really, just as I had expected. I knew I would have to start from scratch and I like doing that anyway. I get rid of all the bloat that seems to gather on my pc. No problems really so far. Couple of minor things, like I want to know if I can make one of the special folders (Pictures) be on a separate drive like I can with Vista? I know I can't do it the same way, but hopefully I can still do that. I love the was that worked, it was absolutely seamless. Now if I can only do that with Windows 7...

One thing that really did annoy me though, was when I went to upgrade my wife's Vista 64 PC to Windows 7 64. It would not let me just upgrade. I have to install from scratch again :( Like I said, I think installing from scratch is the way to go anyway, but this is my wife's PC and she wants everything to be left alone through the upgrade. From what I had read, I thought this would be possible, and I made the mistake of telling her it would be. However, I find out that I can't "Upgrade" Vista Ultimate 64 to Windows 7 Home Premium 64. Geesh, I realize that it's kind of a downgrade/upgrade, but still? Ultimate was not worth the extra money in my opinion, so I wasn't willing to buy Ultimate in Windows 7, now I guess I just have to pay :(

Oh well, time to go searching for program disks...

Ohnos as I have been retired for 6 years I did not need the Ultimate so the Premium to Premium upgrade worked just great for me and would have made your wife happy. It left everything intact.

JohnT,

Yes, I regret having gone with Vista Ultimate, which is why I purchased Win7 Home Premium. But what's done is done so I'm just going to clean install it on my wife's computer. Nothing will be lost unless I can't locate all the program CDs. I think she just doesn't trust me, lol. It will run much better with a clean install anyway. Now I just have to find a point where I have a lot of uninterrupted time so that I can get what she really needs all set up. I'll be in big trouble if I turn it back over to her with just Win7 on it, lol.

The more I use Win7, the more I like it :) I still wish that I could simply move one of the special folders to a different drive, but it will be fine without that feature.
