I have to say this about Vista. To date I think I only recall one problem with it early on and that was mostly my fault. I don't know about Windows 7 but this OS has been one of the least troublesome OS's I've experienced. XP was terrible but I haven't had as much as a pop up box with Vista, no warnings about malware, trojans, viruses, etc. that I had with XP. I think I'll keep it awhile as it seems much more stable than it's predecessors.

I haven't any problems with Vista running on an older Dell Desktop since first released, actually less than with WinXP. Win7 seems to be even better, have it on a Desktop, two Notebooks and wife's Desktop. As soon as Alltel makes software available for Win7 and their air card her Notebook will have Win7.

I agree with David and Berton's comments. The only issue I have with Vista is that it is a bit of a resource hog. I upped the ram on my Laptop from 2.0GB to 4.0GB and Lappy is much happier. I will however be upgrading (new install) Lappy to Windows 7 in the very near future. I have Windows 7 on an older Dell Optiplex 620 and it runs fantastic.

Well I can't say it has been a flawless experience for me lol, but once I worked the kinks out it's been fine. Although i HAVE run across a problem that seems to be unfixable. Despite hours of research and trying many things, a re-install is the only option, which I find as an unacceptable "solution." Other than that one fault, I like it better than XP.

Having said that, I put Win7 on the computer I built my daughter lol. All Win7 is, is Vista with all the original bugs worked out and renamed........

My new computer came with Vista and for a short 3 months I had it and was not too happy with it. Even with 8GB of RAM it would crash my graphics programs every time with no exceptions. Once I upgraded to win7 no problems. Of course the UAC is rather childish and I disabled it on both systems.

John-That must be a heavy duty program you've got. I had a lot of problems with my post processing program, Nikon's Capture NX2 on the 2G XP system and almost abandoned it but, when I got the new computer with Vista with 6G's of memory and a better processor it's been a real dream to work with. I guess I lucked out on this one.

I had problems with all three of my Graphics programs and they have been stellar in win7. Just the luck of the draw I guess.

Using Vista I have found that Disk defragging is a must at least once a week. Graphics programs are notarious for dropping bits and pieces of itself willy-nilly all over the place in Vista. I could defrag and then use one of my Video edit programs, go back and analyze and it's 3% fragged again and I have a Core 2 Quad and 8+GB of memory.Other wise once I had pared down the flashy, bling and bells like I did on my XP Pro machine,,,,,everything is nice using Vista.

I've been using Diskeeper for several years and have been happy with it doing defragging for me. The program seems to have gotten better over time.

I am super cautious and do weekly maintenance, security scans, and backup every Sunday and do defrag once a month.

I use all three operating systems all the time. I probably use Vista the most just because it's on my gaming machine that has two high end video cards in it. I haven't defragged in over a year and all is well. The only time I defrag and cleanup the system restore files, cache, cookies etc is when I make my yearly clone. During the year I use a program called FileHamster Advanced to backup my important files.

Crashes are caused by one or two files in a program that you are using. 9 times out of 10 it's just a corrupt file that needs to be replaced which is easy to do. Just disable the automatic restart tool so you will get a blue screen and google the error code.

My theory is that we've been brain washed to do all this stuff thinking that it's like a tuning up a car and it will run better. That said, I respect the folks that cleanup regularly, it can't hurt to do so. I just choose not to bother anymore.
