Back in the XT and dos days B drive was a floppy drive I think A was too Can that address be used to day for another type drive ? Surely no one is still using the 5 ,12, and tape reels any more.

The B: drive could have been either a 3.5" or a 5.25". The problem is not with Windows but with the legacy settings in the BIOS. As long as motherboards continue to have a floppy drive controller the problem will exist.
