What is WORKSSETUP folder?

Go Start and in "Start search" paste this:
regsvr32 /i shell32.dll
Hold CTRL and SHIFT keys, press Enter.

Restart computer and see, if you still have the issue.

When I did as you asked, a small window came up that said "...(something, something)...success"

After rebooting, there was no change in Explorer. When I double click on a folder under C:, I still get a new window and then can't get back to the drive letters unless I close Explorer and reopen it.

WORKSSETUP is a folder that contains MSWORKS (folder) along with several files including: autorun.inf, config.xml, and WBDEN44I.DLL

I should explain that this laptop has a 110GB hard drive. Although I uninstalled many programs (some wouldn't uninstall) and deleted many files that appeared to be unnecessary, the drive still contains 45GB of stuff, and I don't know where it all is. I wish there was a way to clean off the whole mess and start over, but I don't have any MS Vista disks. I believe the computer came with Vista pre-installed. I don't really need the space, it's just my sense of neatness that makes me want to do this.

Run another command from "Start search":
reg add hkcr\drive\shell /ve /d none /f
Restart computer.

I assumed that I had to hold down CTRL and SHIFT when I hit ENTER. Nothing happened. I tried it twice to be sure.

I rebooted and nothing changed.

Open registry editor again an check two keys:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Directory \ shell
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Drive \ shell
Make sure, (Default) value in right pane is set to "none".

If the above checks out, download registry fix from here
Unzip the file, right click on solve_open_in_diff_window.reg, click Merge
Allow registry merge.
Restart computer.

Open registry editor one more time.
Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

You'll see MountPoints2 sub-folder there.

Right click on it, click "Export" and save the key to known location.

Right click again on the same key and click "Delete".
Disregard any warnings.
Close registry editor.
Restart computer.

I did everything you said, and I hope I saved the registry key properly.

There is no change in Explorer.
