I restarted my laptop a couple days ago and got this message:

"Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMced
Startup options for Windows 2000, press F8.

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows 2000 setup using the original setup floppy disk or CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair."

Can anyone provide some help on how to repair this so I can get the laptop working?

I tried following the directions here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/269075 but when I got to the part about entering "ren system system.old", it says that it can't find the file

I've included a picture of the directory

Oh boy, it's been a while since Win2K.
Your screenshot shows, that you have both files, system and system.alt already renamed to .old

Does that mean I can skip that step? That was what was confusing me - especially since it said it couldn't find it.

I believe so.
