If you call HP, they actually can give you a good price on Windows XP CD.

Thanks, I will be trying that. The computer still works good so I'm not in a hurry to reinstall Windows but it bothers me to know there is an issue that needs to be solved. It's like having a rattle in your car that you can't find.

As far as I've seen, WinXP MCE was only available on a DVD and only as an OEM version [for use only on a new PC].

I have contacted HP and Microsoft both. I explained my issue and ask them for help including an OEM copy. I expect to hear from them soon. I will report what happens on this issue when I have more information.

Just adding my 2 cents (if I'm not too late) with a couple questions Amarillojer;

Is your computer an HP Pav a1430n?

From what I've read on the net your computer has quite a history.

When your computer was infected back in December, did you re-install windows to solve the problem or did you just find and kill the infection?

Do you have more than one cd/dvd burning program on your computer? With your February infection I noticed that you only were using Nero. If you have more than one remove them and see if that solves your problem.

From the way your December HiJackThis log looked your computer was really overloaded with software. Is that still the case?

In the past it's been my experience that 2 cd/dvd drives cause problems. You don't need 2 cd/dvd drives. I would unplug the oldest one if I were you.

Smokey,

My computer is a HP Media Center PC m7658n. Anytime I have ever noticed a virus or trojan AVG reports that it has been removed or quarantined. It is possible that a burning program may have caused my problem. I tend to try several programs on a trial before purchasing one. Right now I do have Nero but it is on trial and I started using it after my problem was noticed.I will disconnect one of my CD drives and see what happens. Broni also mentioned that two drives could be an issue. What I keep going back to is that both CD drives worked perfectly since October of 2007 when I first bought the computer. You are correct that I have a lot of software on the computer and I'm sure I could remove some of it and not miss it. I do have an Uninstaller program that removes all the remnents when I remove programs. I will take a look and see what I can remove as I know I'm not using all of the programs I have on my computer. Yesterday I received a list of things to try from HP. It looks like things I have already tried but will look closely at what they said to do. I intend to go through their list today. Thanks for your reply. I will be back when I find what is causing this problem. I have never reinstalled windows on this computer, it looks like I might be doing that if nothing else works. The scan Broni had me do did show some problem with windows dll files.

Maybe you should pop the hood (open up the machine) and see if the cables are connected properly. Try disconnecting them and reconnecting. Sounds dumb, but has worked for me in the past.

You need only two tools: WD-40 and duct tape.
If it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40.
If it moves and shouldn't, use duct tape.

Harry, I will try that. I did have both CD drives disconnected when I replaced the fan awhile back. Maybe I didn't get a good connection, can't hurt anything to try.
