Neighbor had an old Compaq Presario 1230 laptop that came with 98 and had a version of 2K with very few drivers on it. He wanted me to to make my old wireless PCMCIA card work so he could buy it from me. OK Not too good is 2K. Looking in my stuff, I have 4 copies of 98se with good serial nos. OK... Blitz 2K and reformat from NTFS to FAT32. Tried to install any of my copies....no go, they are all UPGRADES and require a current OS older than 98se. Downloaded 2 copies of 98se, supposed to be clean - no cracks or stuff. Copy 1 don't do squat! Copy 2 starts to boot the install procedure and says it has to do some kinda check. Press OK. comes back and says 'remove any floppy discs and press any key to reboot'. No disks are in the machine! And it just cycles like that. I am trying to install 98se to a clean formatted drive - this is where my memory goes... do I need some form of DOS or something on the drive, or can I just use the 'OEM' 98 copy I on a bare drive?
Do I need to try to D/L another 'clean' copy? Friend was gonna e-mail me a known good zipped copy, but I guess we just can't link up. As I said, I have all good legal serial nos trying to do this legit-wise.....
Suggestions? Or just reinstall 2K with no drivers....
(neighbor dosen't have any software for the laptop.
TIA
Ski
Just found an original CD, way down the bottom of the box, of Win 95 with OEM#. Am trying that now, maybe if that works, I can 'upgrade' to 98se?? Who knows??
How to install 98se
