This happened twice with Windows 7 home premium, the desktop icons vanished. Restored using recovery, but what causes this? Googled the problem, but got no good results.
Any help would be appreciated.

By "restored" do you mean system restore, or you had to use recovery disks?

I used System Restore, which surprisingly did not bring back the lost icons. I ended up reloading Windows 7. I would love to find out what is causing this, so I could may be prevent this in the future.

Thanks for your reply.

I'm afraid, it's impossible to say what happened and why.
Could be number of things, an infection, system file(s) corruption, etc.
