I bought a new computer to alleviate win98 hard drive crash I had.
But, with win7-64 bit installed, I can't load acad200 (suppposedly a 16bit program).
It installed ok on my xp laptop...why not now?
So far, im disappointed with the new Win7.
I can't imagine all the people that need to go to trainig, to adjust to win7.
To me, win7 let's you 'folder jump',ect. nothing but graphics display for the advanced users.
Need to get back to basics for the normal/basic user....
I'm tempted to go back to win98n(rite on Broni!!)
But, I found win-xp to work better on the internet.

But which version of Win7 do you have installed, Professional or Ultimate? Those two can run Windows XP Mode as a second Operating System and most programs that run on WinXP can then be installed while running WinXP. It's about the same as installing the older VirtualPC on Vista then opening it and installing WinXP in it or with VMWare Fusions on Macintosh OS-X and installing WinXP in it.
Watch the System Requirements for WinXP, they ADD to the requirements for Win7.
You say your program [did you mean AutoCAD 2000?] is a 16-bit version but WinXP Pro and Home Edition are 32-bit with Pro also available as 64-bit. All versions of Vista and Win7 are available as either 32-bit or 64-bit.

Computer came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.
Your article mentions that AutoCad 2000 could be a 32-bit. But, the computer says it's a 16-bit.
Suppose autocad is a 32-bit program. Do I need a win7 32 bit version? And if so, how could I convert win7 from 64 bit to 32 bit program, or do I need a new install of the 32 bit version? Thanks for the help Berton

AutoCAD 2000 will install in Windows 7_32 Bit, but not in 64Bit. You have to use compatibility mode to Windows 2000. I have the program installed and works just fine.

"You have to use compatibility mode to Windows 2000."
How do you use "compatibility mode to windows 2000?
"I have the program installed and works just fine."
On what? (the 32-bit win 7 ?)

Mine is running on Windows 7 , 32Bit.
Compatibility mode is an option under the install file property.
Hope this helps.

Appears I needed the 32-bit version. Guess I could buy Win7, which comes with the 2 disks...32-bit and 64-bit.
Then uninstall my version, and re-install the 32-bit version. I'm waiting to hear back from HP, on my Compaq compuer..and see what they say.

The following is HP's responce.
Hello,
Thank you for contacting HP Total Care.
I gather that AutoCAD2000 is not working on the Compaq Presario CQ5320F Desktop PC. So you want to convert the 64 bit of the operating system to 32 bit.
At the outset, I apologize for all the inconvenience this matter might have caused you and at the same time I greatly appreciate that you have forwarded your concern and have given me a chance to assist you with this matter.
Ken, AutoCAD 2000 is compatible only with Microsoft Windows XP, Windows 2000 Professional, Windows NT 4.0, or Windows 98 but not with Windows7. So 32 bit or 64 bit won't make any difference.
The terms 32-bit and 64-bit refer to the way a computer's processor (also called a CPU), handles information. The 64-bit version of Windows handles large amounts of random access memory (RAM). So you cannot directly change the 64 bit to 32 bit.
The System Requirements for Autocad 2000 are as follows :-
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0
Pentium III or later or compatible
64 MB RAM
300 MB free disk space
1024 x 768 VGA with true color
Mouse, trackball, or compatible pointing device.
As it is almost an obsolete product, so Autodesk ended support for AutoCAD 2000 in January of 2004.
The compatible version of AutoCAD for Windows7 is AutoCAD 2011. It is applicable for both 32 bit as well as for 64 bit also.
The System Requirements for AutoCAD 2011 are as follows :-"
Since I'm not ready to shell out $4000 for AutoCAD 2011, maybe I could get another Win XP program, which does work with autocad2000.

Just to keep things in perspective, WinXP is not a program, it is the Operating System that programs run on.
You could get a version that is much less than $4000, our high school uses AutoCAD LT.

Then there's also the TurboCAD program.

Some time ago there used to be a couple of others but haven't looked for them, SmartCAD and GennCAD.

Your right about the OS...sorry.
I noticed that 2 members were able to use autocad2000 with the 32-bit version of Win7. After checking around, it appears I could get the Win7 32-bit version for about $100.
However, the new Compaq computer has an AMD Athlon™ II X2 240 -64 bit Dual Core Processor.
Will I be running into the same problem with the 64-bit processor; even if I changed to the Win7 32-bit OS?

You can run a 32-bit Operating System on a 64-bit computer, usually with no problems. It's just that a 32-bit OS can't take advantage of the faster processing capability.

I'm not that concerned with the 64-bit OS being faster.
Burget7 mentioned that his autocad was working fine on Win7 32-bit. But, he didn't mention which autocad version he had (if that could make any difference). I was also wondering if his CPU was a 64-bit.(if that could make a difference too).
I'm leaning towards installing the Win7 32-bit version, if that could work. I'm not sure why HP says either version of Win7(32 vs 64-bit) won't work; whereas Burget7's autocad works fine.
Burget7....did your program load OK from the disk? Which version do you have?

I got a new win7 32-bit version, which turned out to be a 'system builders' copy. MS said it was a full version, although no warrenty.
I did a 'custom' install, which I thought was going to erase all. But, it did save the 2 folders that I put on previosly, and put those on my 'c' drive. It also put all the previous files into a windows.old file.
Next, after the setup, I was able to install the autocad program without a hitch. Supposedly, autocad2000 uses a 16-bit installer. But, I didn't need to use the compatability mode. So far, seems to work fine.
HP wasn't much help. They also wanted to charge me $59 to use tech help to install the new version.
Thanks burget7 and all. 64-16-32-HIKE
