I use Windows Live Mail on Vista and normally have no problems with it at all. Today I tried opening the program and it never got passed the "Authorizing" state at the lower right bottom on the screen, Normally, it goes from Connecting to Authorizing and then opens but today a box popped up that indicated I needed to enter my user name and password. they already had a user name listed and seven dots for a password so, I just clicked OK. Then, another box came up that I needed to enter my user id again. Clicked ok once more and at that point I got an error that I had used an incorrect password.

I have never had to use a user ID or password with this program before and don't see the need to in order to retrieve email. Anyone experience this before with Vista? I've changed nothing and the only new program I've added was avast anti virus and using Windows Firewall instead of the McAfee I had for 15 months and then let it run out in favor of the aforementioned. I had no problems yesterday with email and have had these two new programs for about a week without problems.

A username and password is always required to access an E-Mail Server. The issue appears to be that it is not being Saved on your computer.

I do hope you uninstalled McAfee before installing Avast!. I've seen issues when bits were left over from older programs. Run CCleaner to check that McAfee is fully gone.

Anytime I want to access email I simply click the icon or touch the envelop button on the keyboard and it takes me right there...except for today. I didn't have to sign in and don't recall having to do that up front.I started from scratch and added a new ID with password. It still asked me for a user name and password. I tried my usual email address in the user id block and that didn't work so I typed in all of it except didn't use the comcast.net I usually use but live.com. I tried that and it didn't work either.

This problem hasn't come up until today and last nights "Windows Security Updates" I had forgotten I did that. I uninstalled McAfee prior to adding avast or turning on Windows firewall so, that shouldn't be the problem.
