Posted this at another site, thought I'd post it here too.
Trying to run SFC. XP keeps asking for SP3 CD - I downloaded SP3 as an .exe file some time ago. I just D/L it again as an .exe file - set it to install and caught it after it expanded everything and burned a copy of that. XP still won't see it.
Extracted the .exe file into it's natural files with WinRar. Looked at my Microsoft issued SP2 CD. The file headings and folders look nothing like the files on the expanded i386 file I have.
Should I just reinstall SP3 or is there another way around this??
TIA

You have to create brand new CD, XP with SP3 pack slipstreamed.

Geez - ya never make it easy, do ya? I'll do that, but I have in the wings a new unused issue of 7 I just may install. I hate to obliterate all and start over, but in the long run, I think that is what I really need. I've been upgrading, patching, slipstreaming, service packing and overinstalling for a couple of years on this basic installation - maybe it's time for a complete wipe.....
The machine has slowed to a crawl in certain places, I am not too sure it's not UVerse and their 12M speed and practically 0 bandwidth - probably going back to RoadRunner soon.
Also something weird is happening in my secondary Yahoo mail account. 2 nights running, it's e-mailed everyone in the contact folder with something - don't know what yet. The only reason I know is, for some reason most of the E's are returned as undeliverable.... This is happening at 5:20 in the morning, so I KNOW it's not me or the Boss. I've gone ahead and deleted all my contacts in that account, never use them anyway, that's just an incoming account.
Gotta think this out some. Thanx for the input......

As for a fresh install, it's always the best option, as long, as you have your data backed up.
Regarding Yahoo mail, I strongly suspect, your account has been hacked.
It's probably time to abandon your current account and create new one.
Hacking web-based mail account happens on regular basis.

Just a note, adding a newer Service Pack to Windows does tend to make a newer version of the Operating System, e.g. if WinXP with SP1 was originally installed the adding of SP2 makes a newer version. If the computer is an OEM/Brand it sometimes works using an OEM disc with the necessary SP built in, same for a Custom using a Retail or Upgrade version and the same type of disc. The files necessary are actually in the i386 Folder on the CD. And the version of Windows is important, use a Home Edition disc with a Home Edition installation, etc.
