I am a huge linux fan but I will admit I have a windows machine for those few things that just do not work with linux.

Any way my favorite linux distro is absolute linux as it just works and does every thing I want plus it is fast.

Only issue is it does not see all 7gb of ram although that is because it is 32bit OS and I can not wait until they make a 64bit version of absolute linux.

I occasionally use a LiveCD version for accessing HDDs when Windows doesn't work, Mint being a nice one as is Knoppix LiveDVD. The only issue I have is quite understandable, can't keep any antivirus/antimalware program on the LiveCD up-to-date. Maybe I'll find a LiveUSB that I can do it with.

Have you tried Wine? It can run most windows based programs.

Check this out:
http://kerneltrap.org/node/2450

You can make it recognize up to 64 gigs of RAM. Only problem is, you have to compile your own kernel.

Howdy Bunnykins. Absolute is basically Slackware (a fork built by one guy)

He built Absolute for his kids who use older 32 bit computers. So don't hold your breath for a 64bit Absolute Linux. Puppy makes a 64 bit distro

Another Slackware Fork Is Vector Linux and ZenWalk

I assume you are already aware of DistroWatch and LinuxOnline

The only reason I boot Windows anymore (maybe a dozen times a year) is when I Have to tune motorcycles.
Other wise. Linux does everything I need to do.

I thought I saw some Linux skills reading your Anti-Virus test thread.
Guess my gut feeling still functions. Howdy and Welcome. We got all kinds here in this forum. Mac,Windows, and Linux users. And guess what? We "all get along" just fine.

I am more of a Debian type of guy myself though I do run Puppy on some ancient Laptops also. Still Learning myself. Self taught user as Broni knows.

Yes I have tried wine and the programs I need do not work under wine.
It is a program I use for work called connectwise.

Ya I do not think he will make a 64bit version any time soon but I can still dream. I did try slackware and it did not work the same as absolute linux. Trying to get dvd play back, flash and nvidia drivers to work in slackware was a pain and I actually could not get it to work like the ease of absolute linux.

I use pclinux as well which is a debian based distro and I had no issues with it so far.

I have been using linux for a long time. I started out by using red hat 6. (some thing), which at the time I just played with it like a toy and went back to windows for every thing else. I then got mandrake and used that up until the time they changed their name. I then used xandros until they stopped offering a free version, basically last one I used was version 3, not sure what they are at now.
After that though I found distro watch and started trying many different ones, even bsd ones like pcbsd that I used for many years until recently when I started having issues with it and switched to absolute linux and pclinux.

Oh the issues I had with pcbsd. I used it on 2 computers a 64bit computer and a 32bit computer and they both started having the same issue around the same time, a few months ago. The 64bit computer that was running pcbsd is the one that has the 7gb of ram. Any way the issue was during the update that they released around that time and it slowed the whole computer down and maxed out the cpu. I could only have 1 or 2 programs open at a time but even that it was slow. Oh and the 64 bit computer does have a dual core so that one did not have the issue as bad.

Before I settled on absolute linux and pclinux I tried one for anime fans called Linux Mangaka which is based on debain/ubuntu and worked well but had instability in the graphics department, basically kept resetting the resolution to 600 by 400.

I do not mind debian but it is also hard to get nvidia drivers to work, actually again I could not get it to work kept asking for a package called source kernel that I could not find.

Oh and I did try those other 2 slackware distros and they had issues as well.

I heard your shout,,,,,Me I'm a Puppy freak and I can't get away from it. There are enough programs/software to keep one happy and there is nothing wrong with 32bit systems. Yes I have a 64bit Core2 Quad system but I do a lot of animation and video. Rokytnji, you should post a basic usage guide for those who could really use one if and when you have time. Your knowledge of this Operating System really could help those who would like to try something different (and even those who think they know all about it).

I did use puppy linux. I used it a lot on one of my old laptops. The laptop had a strange issue and only puppy linux would work on it.

Any way what happened is the computer no longer saw it had a hard drive, installed a new hard drive which I know works and it still did not see it. Now the strangest thing is. The computer started saying it had 3gb of ram, and it only has a 512 stick of ram in it. Take out the hard drive and the computer will say 512 of ram. Put back in the hard drive and it says the 3gb again. So I came to the conclusion that some thing got really messed up in the computer and it started seeing part of the hard drive as ram. So I just used puppy linux on it until it fully died.

Keeper. I have wrote tutorials from installing Linux on a Compaq Pentium 1 Laptop to installing to SD Flash to installing to different EEEPCs plus how to convert sound files, Hardware fixes on Amrel and EEEpc and IBM Laptops, Show how to get skype working in Puppy (MacPUP), etc......

http://yatsite.blogspot.com/

Amrel posts can be found by googling amrel rokytnji

I have about 27,000 posts on the web helping Linux users and posting how to throughout the world. I have been a mod at NING and am currently Mod/Tester for Antix. Some how I was considered worthy of being a mod here to.

I am a member of LinuxQuestions.org,Linuxforums, Murga and Ubuntu forums also.

Not a lot of free time as you can see. But give me a idea on what (if I know how comes into play also) you would like to see. I will try and oblige.

bunnykins, It sounds like your Bios was snafu on that 3gig issue. Linux is good. But hardware problems are hard to overcome. On the nvidia thing on Debian
http://smxi.org/docs/sgfxi-manual.htm

to install smxi in Debian (won't work in ubuntu, slackware, puppy. will only work in pure Debian distros like Linux Mint Debian,Debian,AntiX,Mepis.

# as root, run the following command
cd /usr/local/bin && wget -Nc smxi.org/smxi.zip && unzip smxi.zip && smxi

smxi.sgfxi,svmi home page

If feeling adventurous in Puppy Keeper Give my How toa try.

Happy Trails, Rok

Have you tried to install nvidia drivers on ubuntu/debian?
The trouble I had as stated above as nvidia kept asking for a package called kernel source which was not found in the package manager.

It's been so long ago that I did this though I can't remember off hand exact steps. I forget if I installed through synaptic or not. I'll look.

Yep. I used synaptic to install

Name in synaptic is

Quote

nvidia-current. nvidia-settings. nvidia-185-modaliases. nvidia-common. nvidia-glx-185. nvidia-173-modaliases. nvidia-96-modaliases. nvidia-current-modaliases. xserver-xorg-video-noveau. xserver-xorg-video-nv. smartdimmer. jockey-gtk. jockey-common. conky-all

Above Quote is from doing a nvidia search in synatic to see what is installed via that search.

I run Conky as a systems moniter. I can play games (though not a big gamer).
My Nvidia card is

Graphics: Card nVidia G71 [GeForce 7900 GS] X.Org 1.7.6 Res: 1024x768@50.0hz
GLX Renderer GeForce 7900 GS/PCI/SSE2 GLX Version 2.1.2 NVIDIA 195.36.24 Direct Rendering Yes

So yeah. I guess you could say I have successfully installed Nvidia Drivers in Ubuntu. I know Lots of Mepis Users (just like Debian) that run Nvidia also at Mepis lovers forum.

I had a bit of an issue installing it as it kept asking for a package called kernel source.

I need it do to none of the other drivers allowing me to have a resolution bigger then 800 by 600 and some of those none nvidia drivers for linux only go to 600 by 400.
