Files that I create keep reverting back to 'read only'. I do the right click-property-uncheck read only-apply... poof right back to read only. :crying: This has continued for awhile now, but was not always this way. Even though dos {command prompt} these files presist.

Just a thought from a Linux user. Is the directory/partition those files sit on is read only. Hence the reversing of file permissions.

How do I find out

A directory can be confusing. That is linux talk for file or partition. Like My Documents folder. Wherever those files are sitting (My Documents, Pictures etc....) just right click on main folder that reverting docs sit in and check properties on main folder that files are sitting in. If it shows read only. Change it to read and write.

Same with a partition. Just right click empty space in partition and check properties of partition. No need to format or use disk management I should think.

The Windows users on this forum should be better at explaining this than me. :Sorry56fdg:

I guess I have more control over a Linux operating system than a Windows XP system. These are my file permissions which can be changed on another partition holding a Puppy linux install. I just right click and I can change group or all permissions to read and write if I so wish. Guess I am spoiled rotten. I guess XP is different in that also.

Only the file folders themselves. The RTF, Jpeg, WMA, etc files are fine.

Back in DOS days [last I had was MS-DOS 6.22] the 'path' to files included the Directory where they were stored. The \ signifies the Root Directory of a drive. In 1995 when Windows 95 came out that Directory was renamed to Folder and continues today although there are some folks who haven't gotten in step with that [same as there used to be a Laptop and the later Notebooks but the terms have been blended, most Notebooks get too warm for the lap].

Yes, but how does one get the directory/folder to behave according to ones wishes? I've even tried old school DOS {Ive only got version5.1.2600}.
