Installed Win 7 without a problem! I had downloaded drivers from nvidia and Realtek (for the audio) just in case but the install went flawlessly with only one device unaccounted for and Win Update handled that. I've never been a fan of installing important drivers from Win Update but I'm about to be a believer. Win Update had multiple updated drivers for the SATA controller, video card (this computer has a funky SLI arrangement with an add-in video card and the integrated video), the co-processor, soft modem, network, audio, etc.
And, best of all...not a hint of a "stall" "stumble" "hang" or "freeze"!!
I put Win 7 clean on a new hard drive so I guess the performance culprit in Vista was the hard drive or Vista, with my money on Vista.
Now, a licensing question. As I mentioned, this is not my computer; but, I used my Win 7 disk (previously used to install Win 7 on my system) to install as a "proof of concept" - not with the idea of beating MS out of a Win 7 sale but to see if it would eliminate the "stalls." My friend hasn't agreed to buy a Win 7 license yet but I'm sure that he will after he sees how great this runs - (if he doesn't buy Win 7, I'll put Vista back on the new hard drive from his recovery disks). So, my question: Assuming that he buys Win 7, can I leave this install on here and use the key from the new purchase or do I have to re-install from the new disk? Note that I have not activated this install yet. There were almost 750 GB of updates and drivers not to mention the time loading the OS to start with so I'm hoping to avoid doing all of this again!
Thanks!

If you don't have time to do it right
...when will you have time to do it over?

Great news - I was hoping that would be the case! I'm not a fan of stealing (even from the rich!) but I sure didn't want to spend another 3 hours or so re-doing everything!
Thanks, Broni, I knew that you would know! And, that 30 days will be enough to suck him in to Win 7!!
