For how long can you run it?
Are you doing anything specific, when it shuts down?

If you can make it run for a while....

Disable "Restart on error" feature...

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the Advanced tab (Vista: click Advanced system settings).
3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.
4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.
5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

If we're dealing with some software issue, it should produce some BSOD and stay up.
If it still shuts down, then we're looking rather for some hardware problem.

Have you ever replaced power supply?
Those older eMachines are rather infamous for bad power supplies.

It runs for about 20 minutes give or take.
I don't do anything when it shuts down except to unplug everything and plug mine back in.

Yes, the power supply has been replaced when I had it, that was few years back.
I will do the above next time I switch computers, its such a pain to shut mine down, move it and start the other one up. Might not be today.

Broni - Don't mean to butt in, but - That pic looks like the heatsink and fan for the CPU. Either it fell off when the dog knocked it over or she ripped it off to clean it. But, it needs to go back on ASAP - unless that picture is not a good representation of the actual.

And, of course, the old thermal compound must be completely removed from the heatsink and CPU and new thermal compound applied prior to re-installing it.
If you don't have time to do it right
...when will you have time to do it over?

If that pic is right, no wonder it shuts down - but, I can't explain the 40 deg temp on a cpu with no heatsink or fan, even an older one.

Be a good idea to re-seat the cpu, also.

That is NOT the actual picture, I just took that off the internet. It is just like what is in the computer and yes she did take the fan part off to clean the fins behind the fan blades.

Peggy - Is the heatsink fastened securely on top of the CPU?

The fan runs but sticks tiny bit as it goes round. I will check it because I know that my friend took the fan part off to clean it and she may not have reseated it right. Will try to work on that today and do what Broni suggested.

So, is it just the fan that is loose, not the heatsink?

If you hold the heatsink and try to move it (gently) is it solidly attached to the CPU socket?
