I'm trying to help an 86 year-old lady figure out why she gets this screen every now and then when she boots up her computer.

Hardware Profile/Configuration Recovery Menu

This menu allows you to select a hardware profile to be used when Windows is started.

If your system is not starting correctly, then you may switch to a previous system configuration, which may overcome startup problems. IMPORTANT: System configuration changes made since the last successful startup will be discarded.

Profile 1 (high lighted)

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to the selection you want. Then press ENTER.
To switch to the Last Known Good configuration, press ‘L’.
To Exit this menu and restart your computer, press F3.

There is only one Hardware Profile (default Current) on the computer. This is a new computer built for her by ecollegePC last August with some very nice mid-range hardware specs. She did have a computer tech come in and reinstall her XP operating system (yes, you actually get your disks when ecollegePC builds you a computer!). She made the mistake of syncing a backup from her old Dell which had been causing her a lot of problems. Of course, some of the problems got synched over to the new machine - nothing major, just annoyances like multiple user accounts and a few other things. So this is a fresh install of XP Home.

I did have her try reducing the default 30 seconds to wait for the Hardware Configuration screen to continue booting. Any other thoughts? The lady may be 86, but she is sharp as a tack and knows more about computers than all the other elderly people whose computers I work on put together.

Thank you, Broni! Just heard back from her and the box was indeed unchecked. Can't imagine why as this is a new installation of XP and the default is for it to be checked. Oh, well, she is now a very happy camper! Thank you again....
