I just reinstalled Windows XP on friends laptop. I can't seem to connect to internet. From what I've read, it has said something about having SP3, which I download to put on a CD, but just before it finished the CD it said there was an error.
How do I get this laptop to connect to internet, please?

If you used regular Windows XP CD, not some recovery CD, make sure, you installed all drivers, starting with chipset driver.
Open Device Manager and see, if you have any errors listed there.

Have looked at device manager and there are plenty of yellow marks, but can't connect to internet to download the drivers. Used regular Windows XP.

You have to use working computer and USB flash drive to transfer files.

(A) This is what is listed in device manager with yellow ? (question mark).......
Multimedia Audio Controller
Network Controller
PCI Modem
Video Controller
Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

(B) Then under Network Adapter.....
Realtek RTL 8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC.......it is fine, nothing yellow, but under that.....
WAN Miniport (IPX)...has a yellow ! (explanation point)

Just where do I find the drivers list in (A).
What do I do about the WAN in (B)?

BTW this is a HP Pavilion dv 4000.

All done, drivers all working. Now....she tells me that she connects with Netgear, however I only see LAN or High Speed Internet....Local Area Connection. She does this Wireless, but when I reinstalled Windows then the Netgear was lost. She got this laptop from her boss man and it already was set up to connect Wireless.
What do I need to do to get it to connect Wireless?

Good job Peggy :)

No more errors in Device Manager?
If not, first, get ethernet cable and see, if wired connection works.

Then, her laptop should pickup router signal automatically.
Just make sure, wireless is on.
Depending on laptop, it may be a switch/slider, a button, or a combination of keyboard keys (you may go to HP site and check manual).
There should be some light indicator, that it's on.

Look in Device Manager under Network Adapters.
What do you have listed there?
Intel, or Broadcom?

It looks like wireless adapter is not listed at all.

We could investigate, which adapter you have, but the easiest way will be to download items 1 and 2 from your list and try to install them.
You won't break anything, if you'll try to install wrong one.
It'll just say so and it'll refuse to install.

No, the first one is a egular (wired) network adapter. You need it.
The other entry is irrelevant.

Couldn't use this one:
2. Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver
2006-05-24 , Version:6.00 A, 4.12M
This package contains drivers for the listed Broadcom Wireless LAN adapters installed in the listed operating systems. This driver supports 802.11i/WPA2 for a/b/g and certain b/g WLAN cards.

Downloaded this one, but Avast put ikernal in Sandbox....means something is bad:
4.» Broadcom Wireless LAN Driver
2005-06-01 , Version:4.00 C, 3.32M
This package contains drivers for the listed Broadcom Wireless LAN adapters in the listed notebooks and operating systems. This driver supports 802.11i/WPA2 for a/b/g and certain b/g WLAN cards.

So now what, starting to get frustrated....:)

No, I said first two:

1. » Intel PRO/Wireless Drivers
2006-08-31 , Version:6.00 C, 5.85M (‏Previous versions available)‏
This package contains drivers for the listed Intel PRO/Wireless adapters in the listed notebook models and operating systems.

This package contains drivers for the listed Broadcom Wireless LAN adapters installed in the listed operating systems. This driver supports 802.11i/WPA2 for a/b/g and certain b/g WLAN cards.

Since #2 doesn't work, try #1 (Intel)

Okay, so far so good.....just little bit more to go.
Have limited or no connection...if I click on repair it tries to renew IP address, but says it can't be completed.
Contact person who manages your network....lol, that would be me....lol
