Mac OS X Lion Pre-Install Tips for Home, Biz

OS X Lion

The blogosphere was abuzz this weekend with reports that Apple had released the gold master of OS X Lion to developers. Though the news has not yet been confirmed by Apple, the move likely signals that the digital download of OS X Lion will be released any day now.

The Gold Master version of OS X Lion is the final build before the official product launch. What's interesting with OS X Lion, however, is that it is the first OS to be available exclusively via the Mac App Store.

Apple is delivering two versions of Lion: server and client. With the release expected soon, there are a few things business users and consumers should know before Lion makes its debut.

Specifications Required:
Apple lists the official system requirements for OS X Lion as a Mac running an Intel Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor with 2GB of memory. Systems must be running Mac OS X Snow Leopard v10.6.6 or later to upgrade to OS X Lion. However, before moving to Lion, users are advised to install all Apple updates released the month before Lion becomes available. Of particular importance is the upgrade to Snow Leopard version 10.6.8, which has enhancements to ensure a smooth upgrade process to Lion. Apple is providing software updates as it did with Snow Leopard and Snow Leopard Server, through Software Update.

Users can download either OS X Lion client for $29.99 or OS X Lion Server for $49.99. A user who downloads the OS X Lion client for $30 can upgrade to the Server version for an extra $20.

Business Users:
For businesses with Snow Leopard Server already deployed, upgrading to OS X Lion Server requires that they purchase OS X Lion in conjunction with Lion Server.

Business users can purchase Lion client and server directly from Apple or through Apple's Business Store. Volume License contracts will be available for $29.99 per license with a minimum purchase requirement of 20 licenses.

Businesses may also purchase maintenance contracts for $49.99 with a minimum purchase of 20 licenses.
