Toshiba Laptop, I installed a software and it rename a few of the files, I did not have the disc at the time so I did not save anything so I thought the changes would not stay when shut down, silly me. I was able to retrieve those files from cd using the recovery consoles and then I was able to have windows do a repair, but I ran into a problem when the system asked for a specific file during installation and I was not able to use any keys on the keyboard to cancel that particular request. I figured if I am not able to use the keyboard it is best to use the factory default systems that suppose to have come with the laptop, however when I started to press the key that suppose to bring me to the restore mode I guess I messed up the system file, and the factory default appears to be none existent on the laptop so now I am stuck. I have tried using the recovery console to copy the system file to the c:\ location but it is not there. I would like to know how to copy this file from the cd. Any ideas would be most welcome, thanks in advance.

no this is not the same machine, this machine belongs to my sister. I just get the message that system file is missing or corrupt. I have tried to copy this file and repair this file but each time it tells me that it is not able to locate the file, that is why I have concluded that it is missing. I cannot restore it either since installing windows removes all restore point. So that is why I have come to the conclusion that my only option is probably getting the system file from off the cd.

Some "system files" are created during installation and may not exist on the CD. All the system files are referenced somewhere in the Registry which is made up of 5 Hives [files] that Windows uses to know how to run itself and programs. Usually the missing file name will be shown [such as hal.dll or the Config Folder], good information to know.

I have replaced hal.dll and a few others and I was able to then get the repair option, but now since I pressed the "0" key when booting up i get the system error. I think I am going to put xp on my external hard drive and see if I can do a repair from there.

It won't work.

Do you have any recovery CD which came with your computer, or Windows XP CD?

Assuming you're try to get to Toshiba recovery partition, what does the error say?
