I have a HP laptop that I tried doing a system restore on after I installed internet explore 9. I did not like 9 and wanted to remove it so I thought system restore might do the trick. The computer just sits there with a black screen after trying restore. I boot in safe mode and all I see is a blank screen and in the four corners it shows system restore. I have tried everything I know. I have many pictures I want to save . Any suggestions on how to do this. This computer does have the recovery partition and I hope I can get windows back. Tom

Is one way to go about it. At least there are screenshots. Broni posted somewhere on the forum about transferring Windows Files using Ubuntu also.

Thanks, this laptop is actually one of my good friends. I am meeting here this afternoon and we will see if we can save those files. I will let you know. She also knows she should not have used system restore to remove IE9, at least she does now. I will be back soon with our results. She does not a Vista DVD, nothing was shipped with the laptop. I have one but not sure if it would work because its from a Dell. Thanks and wish us luck. Tom

It was so easy using the HP tools. HP was thinking when they installed this program. It took a while but worth the wait. I got the computer back to factory and got all backups restored. Anyone using a HP this is how to do it and I love this option when a computer will not boot due to a corrupted operating system.
