A little assistance here would be greatly appreciated....

Have a nurse friend who helps my wife who has an HP dv4 1275mx laptop. Once or twice a year, I get to clean all the nasties out for her. I got it the other day because the screen went white. (inverter & back lights are obviously ok!) It boots to factory Win 7 Home Premium on an external monitor normally. Would it be safe to assume that only the screen is kaput? There are some articles out there referencing this machine and a factory fault involving the white screen and motherboard, which would have been replaced under warranty (hers expired last November). Being I have no 'known good' parts to swap out, should I just tell her worst case scenario 80.00 + shipping for a new screen?

Once I get the OK from her to disassemble it, I know the possibility of a broken, frayed, worn video cable exists, but probably not in my case. These things are a bit of a b*&^h to take apart.

Anything else to look for? As I said, I A$$/U/ME all else is OK, cuz it boots fine with an external monitor.

Suggestions appreciated..

Thanx

Just a suggestion, see if Safe Mode works. Also see if VGA mode gives any different results. Check if fans are running as heat can play havoc on the screen inverter causing the screen to turn white.
Another option is this:

1) Reboot and press F8
2) Select "Repair my computer"
3) Select the keyboard layout and language
4)On system recovery tools, select System restore.
5) Select the restore point when it was working fine and restart the computer.

Are you getting a white screen from the get go?

I ran into this on a couple of Laptops. Pulling the screws that hold in the screen to top panel that holds lcd,and maneuvering to the back of LCD screen where a ribbon cable connects. I pushed the ribbon cable upwards to make sure it was seated good. Then used Duct Tape to secure ribbon cable to back of lcd screen (while I am pushing up on ribbon cable. Reassemble. Rebooted. Bios screen came up. Booted Linux live cd. Desktop for Linux came up. Just my experience with these kinds of issues. That ribbon cable comes loose eventually from opening and closing the lid over time.

Keeper - have no laptop screen to work with. Have tried all combinations to make it boot with it's own screen no-go...

Broni - Getting a white screen from the get-go - no variation - just white. The machine POSTs ok and continues on to Windows.

Roky - I am familiar with the inner workings of the LCD/inverter, etc of a laptop, I just wanna be semi sure I'm not gonna charge this person too much for something she don't need. As I said, if I had some stuff to swap out to track down the problem - I'd be more sure. She carries this thing everywhere she goes, SOOOooo there is a minute possibility the ribbon cable to the LCD/LED has jarred loose. There is also some talk out there on this particular machine of wear-through of the ribbon cable. (I should be so lucky!!)

Just left a message on her phone - told her it will probably take me 7 - 10 days, unless she wants to pay a lot more for faster shipping. I've had the machine for 2 days, and she is already in a tizzy.....

I know I'm gonna be cheaper than almost anyone out there - so we'll see.....

Keep ya posted......

I cheat/cheap, the cracked/scraped insulation problem, with liquid tape (vinyl tap in a can with a brush). I am a low budget repair guy also. I try and save parts when possible. If Cable breaks. Then I replace cable. I have yet to see if ribbon cable ever came loose from inverter though as the ones I have worked on had 2 screws holding plug securely into inverter. External Monitor rules inverter out anyways. White screen rules out Bulb and Lcd screen (most likely). All that leaves is ribbon cable harness and connections. Just my take on this.
