I recently got hit with one of those redirect viruses which seems to be pretty common right now. I've never had a virus in all of my years of using a computer. I've always used a firewall and a virus scanner. I don't use and P2P software and I don't go to any suspicious sites.

I'm pretty sure I got hit because my virus scanner quit working. I was running AVG2011 and I found in the AVG forum that there was an update distributed that would not install on 64-bit computers so AVG stalled and wasn't updating or scanning. I didn't notice that AVG wasn't working until I after I started having problems.

It just seems that there are a lot of people getting hit with viruses right now. Does that seem to be the trend or is it that I just never noticed it before?

The WWW has gotten worse over the years, from rootkits, key loggers, and bots that take control of your computer. I try to use the best antivirus I can and that does change from year to year so I don't stick with the same program when I learn that the particular vendor is not keeping up with malware I switch to a different one. Currently I am using Kasperksy. You have to check the reviews on them yearly so you can stay ahead of the bad guys. Of course this includes a separate firewall, and two malware detection programs as well.

Secunia ( a security site) has a free program that will check your system for programs that are not up to date and suggest what should be done. I don't endorse it one way or the other as I have not used it but have heard it is supposed to be pretty good small in size at 1.7mb

A lot of Malware redirects in a browser are usually heavily dependent on using java or flash to work.

It takes some practice to run

http://noscript.net/

To know what to allow (default is to block all java script execution in browser) . Me, though I run Linux, and have no issues with Malware, I run noscript and
