...when will you have time to do it over?

Disconnect Vista drive again.
Please Boot to the System Recovery Options
If you have Windows 7 installation disc, just insert a DVD to the drive, restart computer and it should load automatically (option two presented in the article).
It's possible also that your computer has a pre-installed recovery partition instead - in such a case use a method one (by pressing F8 before Windows starts loading)...
On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:
- Startup Repair
- System Restore
- Windows Complete PC Restore
- Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
- Command Prompt
Choose Command Prompt
You should see X:\SOURCES>...
Execute the following commands in bold.
Press Enter after every one of them.
bootrec /fixmbr (<--- there is a "space" after "bootrec")
exit

* With both drives connected, I get a choice to boot to 7 or Vista
* With the Win 7 drive disconnected, I can boot to Vista
* With the Vista drive disconnected, I get a boot error message: No boot media
Seems that Win 7 boots, at least partially, from the Vista drive.

I'm afraid that the fix will screw up the ability to boot. What do you think?

Two questions...

Remember that we still have no single proof that Win 7 is in fact infected.

Will it still boot to 7?
Yes boots to 7 without problem - but only when both drives are connected.

Clearly there is something wrong with 7 MBR (infected), or with the drive itself.

I agree. The drive passed a CHKDSK but can't run a S.M.A.R.T. test or WD diagnostics because of the inability to run exe files!
I'm out of it tonight but will repair the MBR on the 7 drive in the morning and let you know.
Thanks!

I'm still not sure which direction we should go since I'm not sure if we're dealing with some infection, or not.
Try Win 7 repair installation: http://www.w7forums....tall-t1204.html

Will let you know how it turns out - it'll be awhile, I've got WD Data Lifeguard Tools writing zeroes to the whole (500 GB) disk. Appreciate the help but no point punishing you any more!
