I acquired a gateway M series laptop for for wife. I bought a hard drive and windows 7 pro. It installed perfect and found all drivers. The problem is now when she is browsing the internet she gets a blue screen and the computer restarts quick. She is using internet explorer 9. I can start a topic under the malware fourm if needed. The computer has all updates and I think is virus free. I have scanned with ESET and it finds nothing. She was just on ebay and it locked up and had to manually restart. This started happening about a week after I installed windows 7. The computer came loaded with Vista. The hard drive crashed and I could not find a recovery disk so I just bought 7. Anyway to tell what is causing this? I have tested the memory with the mem tester cd (run all night) and also tested the hard drive. All show good. Sorry if I did not suppy enough info but for now thats all I can come up with. Thanks oldtrig

Download BlueScreenView (in Zip file)
No installation required.
Unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply..

It seems to be caused by vwififlt.sys (Windows Virtual WiFi Filter Driver).

Let's run quick test.
Hardwire laptop to the router, disable wireless connection, use IE for a while and see if BSOD will occur.

No problem.
We have two possibilities here...
Either vwififlt.sys file is corrupted, or a wireless driver, which most likely is using that Windows file is corrupted.

She has been using it for five hours on the cable and no crash yet. I think you nailed it. What do I need to check now? I will wait on your reply.

I'd start with reinstalling wireless driver.
Go to Gateway website, download fresh one, uninstall current one, install new one.

No wireless driver available for windows 7 pro 64 bit. I may be out of luck unless I can install a USB wireless adapter and it works with the blue screens and locks up. I went to ebay this morning using the wireless and it locked up, no blue screen , just froze. Also when I went to read our local newspaper I could not type my email address to sign in. After about five minutes I could sign in. I noticed the clock is also losing time. oldtrig

What's the link to Gateway downloads?

You may try Vista driver, if they have it.

Also....

Please download SystemLook from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

64-bit users go HERE
  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Vista\Win 7 users:: Right click on SystemLook.exe, click Run As Administrator
  • Copy the content of the following box into the main textfield:
    :filefind
    vwififlt.sys

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

The Gateway website did not have a driver for the wireless adapter for window 7 (64bit). I happened to have a USB wireless adapter in my basement that came with my router I bought from newegg. I disabled the on-board wireless and installed the new USB wireless adapter and it has been working for one week now and no blue screens. Broni, you are the man. I really appreciate your help on this. THANKS THANKS THANKS. Tom :happy_dancing: :pianosmiley:
