On a neighbors computer; Generic machine, about 7 yrs. old, using WinXP Pro, 2GB RAM. Since d/l the latest version of ZoneAlarm she claims a message appears to depress either F1 of Del to start the computer. After depressing F1 the home page opens and she is able to access either IE8 or FF browsers. (Odd, before pressing F1, she can open OE and access her e-mail).

I've done a visual don't see any 'bloated' or discolored components and the fan on the processor is working. Of course, as I said it is 7 yrs. old and I may be missing something. I don't take computers to my home workshop anymore. If I can't detect the problem in-house then I suggest they call a computer shop.

Pressing the F1, F2 or Del key [or other key] at bootup suggests the motherboard needs a new CMOS battery. At the age of 7 years it would not be unusual. That battery maintains power to the CMOS which holds the BIOS settings. The battery is usually a CR-2032.

Berton, thanks, the thought had occurred to me, but in that the clock wasn't losing any time kind of threw me.

Funny mine has a new battery, and the time is the only thing wrong... complete opposite of yours.
I am curoius to know if you fix it with a battery...

It wasn't the CMOS battery, but I did remove the graphics card to do a visual - when I reinserted the card and started the machine, no video. So, I guess it may be the video card at fault.

Enable on-board video (if present) in BIOS and see if things are back to normal.

It's my experience that adding a video card to a motherboard doesn't actually disable the built-in adapter and have never found a setting in the BIOS to disable it like there is for the sound and LAN adapters.

Thanks for all the help guys, but she finally came to the conclusion to order a new computer. Took hers back home, hunted around and found a comparable video card, somehow It came on, but still required hitting the F1 or Del key - when I attempted to connect the router it went totally blank - and that was it. It's now set in the corner waiting for the next trash pick-up (after salvaging what I might use one day).
