This morning, my husband took my old monitor (big bulky thing) and replaced it with one of his two. This is a flat screen. I "added hardware". This afternoon, it keeps shutting down. The only reason it remains on at this moment, is because when it started back up, I did Ctrl. Alt. Delete and removed anything that I didn't recognize upon boot up. I only mentioned the monitor issue, because that is the only new thing involved here.

Is there any reason that would cause my computer to shut off? It is not shutting down, but simply *poof* and it is black screened.

Yes. I have to push the button to restart. It only remains started for a few minutes, except this time, when I removed something at boot up.

Did you need drivers for the new monitor? Did it come with a install disk? How old of a cpu is it? Sounds like a power issue, like the power supply is possibly starting to have issues or the video card. Check sleep mode/power save functions and make sure they were off.
What is the refresh rate of the monitor set at? 60Mhz should be workable.

I did not install any drivers from a cd. I did click on a little add new hardware bubble and ran through, letting the computer configure it.

This particular monitor is probably 8 years old or older. You know, now that you mention it, my husband is having issues with his video card. Whenever he goes to a website to stream video, it shuts off. I bet that is my issue!!! I bet this monitor is toast. It ended up not working AT ALL on his computer, so he gave it to me and it worked (or so we thought!).

I turned off sleep mode after reading your response.

How do I find refresh rate?

In most cases monitors are plug-and-play devices and the don't need any extra drivers.

Shut down issue and a new monitor may be just a coincidence.

If you still have your old monitor hook it back and see if same issue happens.

Also start computer in safe mode and see if you have same issue.

The most common cause for computer shutting off is overheating.
When was the last time you cleaned inside the computer case using a can of compressed air?

If the computer stays up long enough....

Download and install SIW Multilanguage With Installer (SIW free version) (bottom of the screen)

Run the tool.
After it scans your computer, navigate to Hardware>Sensors and post all info from there.

Well, I was afraid to turn it off for a few days. It ended up having an automatic update and reboot. It's been fine ever since. I appreciate your replies!
