A friend just got a 320gig external HD. After formatting he imaged his C: drive, using Acronis True Image Home 2010, but when trying to restore the image the program just didn't act in the normal way.
I also use the same version of Acronis, but on a secondary internal HDD. So took the drive home and hooked it up to the USB port on my machine. When attempting to restore I can see the E: drive and MyBackup.tib, but the Next button is "grayed-out".
I've not used an external drive for imaging, always used a "slave", or on the current machine I use a second sata drive and it works fine.
Incidentally, he had partitioned and formatted the drive, then later removed the partition. It's a Seagate drive, measures about 3"x41/2".

Going into Google I noticed they mentioned d/l a Seagate Manager - I'll check with him tomorrow and see if he has done that.

Good idea, Broni, but somehow I don't think it's an Acronis problem - I may be wrong, anyway, I called him and asked him to try d/l the Seagate Manager and see if that solves his problem. Thanks!

WinXP, WinVista and Win7 cannot create or format partitions larger than 32GB as FAT32, larger than 32GB has to be formatted as NTFS.

This is one with which I going to have to give-up. We partitioned and formatted the ext. dr (E: and F:). Copied the C: drive, including the OS and all files and data, it shows up on the external drive (E). When we put the Acronis bootable disc to recover the image, it sees the E: drive and location E:MyBackup.tib. Click Next, fine, when he clicks on Proceed, a screen message appears, with the message "what do you want to do with the C: drive"? (That I can't figure out).
When he copies an image to the D: (internal 2nd drive) and then an image restore - it works fine.
I'm totally lost, so I told him to just use the ext drive to back up files, folders and music.
