Restart computer in Safe Mode with Networking and see how it goes there.
It looks like internet speed is fine but something is choking browsers.

I will give it a go.

In safe mode right now and it is still slow, no change.

Hmm...another try...
Turn everything off and connect your computer straight to the modem bypassing the router.
See how it goes.

I tried that this morning and it was the same, I know that there are issues with the computer and I believe hardware. I do system maintenance weekly all the security scans daily so I won't worry about it until the new year and get it in the shop. The laptop is working fast so that eliminates modem and router from the equation. Thanks for the help Broni but we will just let this go for now, too many holiday things to concentrate on..........

I think your on target and or possible memory or video care problems as well. I see things load slowly on graphics and icons after startup so this thing has a few ills I will get checked on. Amen for having a laptop and perhaps a tablet for Christmas?

Oh no I am not going there, lets just say it is temperamental. But I did get my Kindle Fire for Xmas, so already set it up with email and have had a lot of fun going to different sites and now I just downloaded the manual so I will know what I am doing. More toys more net options.............

Have you made use of the NETSTAT command?
netstat -e -s
This will show you statistics for your TCP/IP stack. Run it on both the desktop and the notebook - if you see a major difference in something such as number of error packets or retransmits it could mean that you have a problem with the ethernet cable or adapter card.

I have Comcast "triple play" service, they provided a modem by Arris. It is addressible such that you can get at statistics, status, error log etc. While my LAN subnet is 192.168.120.x, I can get into the modem via this address:
http://192.168.100.1/cgi-bin/cm_state_cgi
It reveals that I had a loss of synch signal on Dec. 11 - my guess is we had one of our extended power failures.

I suppose it would have been nice to provide a sample of a presumably healthy connection.
